Got a phone call from the wife this morning when I got to work to say the car door was slightly open and the car had been rummaged through and the fuse box cover was off.

Nothing appears to have been taken as the stack of CD's and sat nav appeared to still be where it should.

What do we think, chancers who tried the door handles and found it wasn't locked (wouldn't be the first time I've gone out to the car and found the wife hadn't locked it) and just had a look through for anything of value.

Or was someone attempting to pinch it?

Thankfully living in a terraced house means the car can be parked outside any of 10 houses (and wasn't outside ours last night) so they don't know for certain which house it belongs to.

Thoughs please Smile

No harm done, don't lose any sleep over it. If to want to buy yourself some "peace of mind", my copper chums recommend the Stoplock Pro steering wheel lock. It's what they use themselves, based on attending successful and failed car thefts.

My thoughts, beat the wife until she remembers to lock the car when she leaves it.

She normally does, just with a toddler and bags of shopping it's sometimes a case of lean out the door and point the remote while toddler tries to get back out the door!

just had another phone call, had some work kit taken from the boot - of value to buy but of naff all use to someone trying to sell it on so police have been notified.

Last time I had a car broken into it was back when I lived in Romford. Car had immobiliser but no alarm, they
smashed the rear quarter, reached in and wound the rear windows down and climbed in through them because
the doors had secondary deadlocks. They took the service record out of the glove box and the charger for my
wifes satnav. Both were dumped in a garden a few doors down and were found a week later. I had to pay
80 odd quid for a replacement quarterlight and seal, and I took the car to a proper car alarm place and spent
another 300 odd quid having a decent TOAD alarm hard wired into the car. It also took a good fortnight for the car
to dry out as it was pissing down the night it was rootled and left with a rear window wide open all night. I was pretty
annoyed about losing the service record, so I was delighted when a neighbour knocked about a week later and
handed it back. It had our address in it because we had purchased the car from the main agent. Thumbs Up
Presumably thiefcunt figured out it would tie him to the crime so he lobbed it and probably defaced someone
elses property not long after because he didn't score much from me.. And for all that hassle, a morning off work,
a visit from the SOC people and 400 quid down, the little CUNT didn't even take anything. I wish nothing but an
early and slow death to him. Middle Finger

Quite unlikely these day's IMO as every car is now imobilised from the factory.

According to one school of thought, if the car is a piece of shit old banger you might as well leave the car unlocked and no valuables in it, as it saves you having to replace the window if scrotes are gonna go rummaging about. My dad used to do this in various shit cars apparently.

One of my friends dad apparently used to pop the hood and take the HT leads out of the distributor if he was parking his RS Turbo in a dodgy area.

It's a 2013 Kia Cee'd estate pov spec so not the most desirable vehicle, but also not the hardest to shift on / sell the parts.

Bemused by removing the fuse cover unless they thought it a storage hatch that might have something worthwhile in.

Police aren't interested in getting prints so wife is just getting crime number to be able to file an incident report for the equipment at work and find out if it's up to us to replace it.

This. When I lived in Plymouth one of my housemates was walking home and said that the guy ahead of him was trying every car door handle up the road. Your wife needs something to remind her to check that she has locked the door, or teach the toddler to remind mummy.

Mate living here a few years ago did that and some other cars nearby were broken into, his had just been rummaged through, nothing damaged and nothing taken.

It's a great school of thought until some dickhead breaks the window despite the door being unlocked. Laughing

You can use your new Stoplock, they're pretty hefty. Thumbs Up

Yup, I used to leave my shitters unlocked. Mrs Borg managed to lock the keys in our SEAT once when we were at an historic reenactment event. "Does anyone know how to break into a car without putting an axe through the window?" I asked. 2 minutes later, it was open.

What you'll want to concentrate on it locking your house door. Again from coppermates, most of the successful thefts they attend involve a pikey just opening the front door and grabbing whatever's to hand. If that includes your car keys, then they'll drive away with their loot.

Car keys live hidden in the dining room except when she leaves them in her coat pocket...

it's her car...

The area we live has a reletively low crime rate, or did until recently. The local police station has closed and is being sold off - it was only open a couple of days a week anyway. We mainly have petty crime and people stealing catalytic converters from Merc vans.

I know the car won't lock if the doors aren't shut properly.

Maybe someone just looking for somewhere to sleep, and they had a bit of a rummage before bedtime.

I thought most cars lock themselves nowadays when left unoccupied for a period of time?

My basic model 05 golf certainly does.

1 press opens driver door only, double press opens then all.
Auto relock only happens if you unlock it first, but then don't open a door within 30 odd seconds. But it won't lock by
itself if you just open it and sit in the car even if you don't put the key in the ignition. It won't lock until you start moving
(approx 10mph) which is the anti hijack feature. (Switchable via vagcom on all models or also by maxidot on higher spec/newer models.)
All standard VAG convenience spec.

TBH, if someone tries and fails to steal something and leaves it outside my house it's more of an arse than if they succeed and die in a ball of flames 200 yards away.

As much as I love the exup, the fucker lives out on the road with no chain.

That happened to friend of my fathers. He ran old bangers and never locked them or left anything in them. Parked in a car park overnight and some numnut smashed the window to get in. Judging by the muddy foot prints they even climbed through the window. Laughing
