I need help assessing crash damage the previous owner left my CB500 with.

My main concern is there appears to be instant gasket sealant around the head of the engine.

Is this at all normal to use gasket seal for this? (my CG just had a rubber O-ring style seal)
I have scouted through Haynes and can't see a mention of any form of seal when replacing the head cover, it's all rather vague.

Is the gasket seal going to cause a headache at all?

I have been riding it since november and no oil leaks or performance issues as of yet.

With the damage that there is, is there anything else I should be looking at?

Stuff I've checked:
Wheel bearings
Weld points on the front end frame are uncracked. (ones that were visible when taking the front fairings off anyway)
Had forks seals redone and had to replace a stanchion due to pitting also.

Cosmetics do not concern me, only safety and reliability for getting to work.

So is it time to stop spending any money at all keeping it running smoothly and run the old gal until she dies? or not a huge concern?

Seriously?
If its an old cheap bike that's not dropping oil and running well, ignore it.
If its reliable and not left you by the side of the road carry on
and just do the usual servicing.

Sometimes, small amounts of grease or sealants are applied to the rubber gaskets to help hold them in place while refitting the valve cover.

Thanks, I can be somewhat neurotic when it comes to my work runner but so much is smashed on this bike I keep expecting the worst.
I mainly ask as part of the usual service routine will require taking that cover off shortly. (Valves) Smile

The crash bars are scraped/rusted on both sides, but not bent as far as I can see, looks kind curved in that photo but IRL it sticks out further than any engine bits do.

I will try to remove the bar end (it spins in place atm so I imagine it is damaged internally) and may well take you up on the offer thanks Smile

Gaskets very often have sealant at the cam cut-out. Nothing unusual there.
