I'd say what you've suggested is pretty much spot on.
Only thing I'd add is that after you've ridden with him a few times, make him go out on his own and ride, as I'm sure this will boost his confidence more. ____________________ There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk.

I'd made insurance arrangements, instructor met me at my place, we bimbled through the back roads for a bit and toured the roundabouts out by the airport until he was satisfied. Then we went back to the training school and my instructor told me I could have my certificate if I was happy to ride home. Apparently I turned quite pale. It was the kick in the ass I needed though.
My point: Take somewhere, then task with getting home unaided is a great confidence builder.
Particularly (as confidence and ability grows) unfavourable times of day, routes that would not otherwise be taken and less than ideal weather conditions. |
A similar thing happened to me.
Did the CBT on my own bike, got my certificate and watched as my instructor rode away, leaving me in the middle of nowhere, with a MOTORBIKE
After a few minutes of sheer panic, wondering how the hell I was going to get the bike home and running all sorts of possibilities through my head, I came to the conclusion that the only option was I'd just have to ride it home.
I had to negotiate about half a dozen roundabouts too, which we hadn't done on the road training and needless to say I stalled it on at least half of them. I also rode a fair bit out of my way to avoid a dreaded hill start on one of the junctions. In fact, I did that for about another two months. It was a very steep hill though. ____________________ There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk.

How about you pick an interesting location that you both know (like somewhere that does decent bacon butties) about an hour's ride away, and take it in turns to lead the way - then if you are both happy with how it went, let him make his own way back. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Having someone that you trust guarding your rear end is an obvious benefit, but I also found it useful to follow a more experienced rider at times, as it helps you to gain confidence with road positioning. ____________________ Honda Varadero XL125(V8)

Hello,
Remember doing this and always felt less confident when another rider was viewing me. Once I had done a fair few miles on my own on the 125 I felt better prepared to be critically analysed (slaughtered) by the instructor. And in your sons case his father |
