Keep Mac book pro or Windows laptop?

I have a lenovo flex 2 14 inch. I5 4210u (1.7 GHz, 2.7 GHz with TurboBoost, 3 MB cache), 6gb ddr3 and a 500gb sshd 5400rpm.

The woman has a 13 inch Mac book pro mid 2012. I5 processor 2.5ghz (3.1 with turbo boost), 4gb ddr3 ram and a 500gb 5400 hdd.

She doesn't use her Mac. Im Getting back in to photography. Will be used for editing 24mp raw images in light room and photoshoot (torrent copies).

Never had a mac although they obviously have a reputation with editing. My laptop feels faster although it's currently being repaired under warrantee for the 2nd time (keeps randomly becoming unresponsive and then crashing and failing to restart. It's had a new hdd but I'm hoping they swap the memory next.)

Do I upgrade the mac with more ram and a sad?

Do I canabalise mine and stick the ram and hdd in to the mac the sell mine?

Just sell the mac?

Sell both and build a tower?

If you sell the mac you can recover around £500-600, depending on condition - that could go towards a new build nicely. If you don't like OS X probably best to get rid of it.

However, given the option I'd upgrade the mac. More ram (unofficially they support 16GB ram) and an SSD would help matters - standard drive is a 5400 rpm sata (6Gb/s). An SSD will make a massive difference to the overall performance. Both ram and ssd can be added relatively cheaply.

Video card is Intel HD Graphics 4000 but it supports and external 2nd screen at a max res of 2560x1600.

The Apple OS is about 35-40% of the price of a Apple device. Do the math.
Might be less, the marketing and branding also cost money of course. I mean the real value of the HW on the market vs. the price of a Apple device using that HW+their OS.

4GB of RAM in the Mac, is more than it will ever need, so more RAM wouldn't make it any better actually. A ''tower'' PC is the best way to go. It's the cheapest solution with the best price/performance ratio.
Also, more RAM does not necessarily mean better overall performance. There are 2 options, you've got enough of RAM or not enough of it.

EDIT: I missed the bit about 24mp pictures, but still, selling it and building/getting a desktop would be the best way to go. CaNsA says Phil's got something you could look at.

Perhaps because you're going around running them on 4Gb RAM. Memory is cheap these days.

Sure sure, so Mac users know it's crap, yet they are buying it. Am I missing something? I stand corrected, I have never thought Apple got that far, that it needs 4GB of RAM to just run the OS. Win 7 and 8, 8.1 is pretty alright, for the basic stuff with, only 2GB (2x1024MB) of RAM. Once again, you might say I'm mental, but I tried it and it was alright for the office work and the internet (7, 64bit).

Now looking at what Apple sells and the basic models do have 4GB of RAM and the prices are as mental as I recall them.

Don't tell me a laptop bought for the same money you'd put into a desktop has got the same performance though.

Also when I said enough or not enough of RAM, I was not really aware of someone would actually run an OS that its minimum requirement was 4GB of RAM.

So if you don't buy into the groupthink that Apples is shit then your a fanboi.

The main issue with a 2012 macbook is that it's a 3 year old design, that said chuck a ssd into it and you've got a speedy old box, you could go to 8GB but the bang for buck isn't as good.

The only people I know that haven't given up on Windows long ago, are the ones paid to look after it.

I'll see what real world performance is when I'm at a stage to edit a file on both machines. I'll pick the winrarrrr that way. I'll then decide what needs upgrading.

I would probably prefer to keep a laptop. Saves me being confined to the bedroom when I could be lounging on the sofa.
