morning all

just got my old zzr back and it's almost broken every tendon in my hand clutching on the way home. it used to get me a bit achy sometimes when i owned this bike before...

i'm likely just being a fanny, but is there anything that could make it painfully heavy? (i've ordered a new clutch cable to try that)

it also had new clutch plates before i bought it the first time a couple of years ago.

Cable routing can have a surprising effect on how heavy the clutch feels.

Also, the nylon liner in the cable outer might have parted ways with the rest of the cable run, and fused to the cable.

Are there any pinch points on the cable run?

nah i think the pivot is ok...

i'm thinking it's just a combination of new clutch with good springs, and a slightly shagged cable... so will try that and see what's what.

a few drops of 10w40 worked through the cable works well. I just turn the top adjuster so the slot is facing up and pump the clutch whilst adding some oil from the can into the slot. You could get fancy and pressure lube but it's a pain in the ass, and spray lubes don't work as well.

Anyone tried one of the devices that force grease into a cable, are they any better or a recipe for sticky shite build-up at each end?

My clutch cable has a rubber boot at each end so I can run them quite oily.

Please use something other than WD40, something like 3 in 1 oil is better.
Look on a can of WD40 and nowhere does it say lubricant. It is a water dispersing cleaner that eventually dries out and makes things worse.
New cable and routeing should sort it, if not is the clutch basket badly notched?

He's right, it is right there in the name Water-Disdisplacer - 40th. fomula.

Even tho it says it on the tin, it won't last long and cause more issues then fix. Sure it's fine for a door hinge, but for something exposed to the elements on a daily basis it's a bad choice.

After all you don't see WD being used on Aircraft or Submarines now do you?

I did say 10w40 not WD-40. To be specific I use the the same JASO-MA2 10w40 engine oil that goes in the bike. Owners manual recommends 10w30 for general lubrication, but same manual also suggests I mess about with 10w30 in the winter and 20w40 in the summer. 10w40 for the win.

Embarassed My bad rating as well. Sorry, we recently had that Acerman special sperging "WD-40" as the panacea for everything, I'm still a bit twitchy over anything with 40 in it.

It may also help to drop the lever down (by rotating it 'forward') a bit, if you can. That will line it up better with your wrist when you close your hand over the lever.
