Define characterful?
An 08-onwards R6 would be characterful as you really have to keep the revs up; they are terrible low down but great fun when you're on it.
A 10-on Daytona is also different; it doesn't have the same top end rush but the triple engine is superb. Spend the change on tyres, fuel and a few track days. ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

Low-down torque is more a function of how the engine is tuned than cylinder count.
A large capacity bike tuned for torque could fit your bill. I wouldn't count the cylinders to figure out that; I'd look at the power output compared with the engine capacity. Comparatively low power output for the engine size generally means it's tuned for low-down torque. ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

Trouble with going larger capacity is, you tend to get more weight with it, where they've beefed up frame and engine components. I'm going with the Street Triple/MT-09 suggestions here on first consideration. I would think they'd be better suited to these tight Devon lanes than anything bigger. Or a supermoto of some description. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Any mid-weight naked bike with a il3/4 should be alright.
I had a CB-1, 180 kg or so dry, short wheel base. That bike was swift at any circumstances given. I only sold it because 400cc engine was really of my likings speaking of mpg/performance. Bigger engines of the same layout having better mpg and way better performance made me sell it actually.
Look at Hornets 600/919, Z750/800/1000, Triumph 600/675 naked bikes, and so on. I think there is a motorcycle that will suit you.
If you really don't care about the fuel economy and you really like V2 engine layouts, then go for it, but bear in mind, that you're gonna get less power and even 40%+ worse mpg, than what you'd get from a IL-4, of ''comparable'' performance.
That's also pretty much the reason, why is Ducati allowed to have the 1299cc engines on the track, with more fuel than others.
The last time a liter V2 motorcycle was competitive, it raced against 750cc in-line fours.
EDIT: I am biased, and I'd never have a V2 motorcycle as my the no. 1 bike. But there are V2 motorcycles I'd like to have some day. A 748/996 would be nice, or a VTR SP01/02. Get the fuel tank full upto the cap, ride it for about 80 miles, time to go back home. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

You could try one of those old Honda Bros 650s. Light and narrow 188kg 50 horsepower V-twin commuter engine in a very flickable sportbike frame. Even comes with a single-sided swingarm for that extra str33t cr3d! Tiny tank range though, something along the lines of 100 miles or something. ____________________ Motorsapien Art |
