Hi chaps and chapettes

Just wondering if anybody knows what kind of price the people at Eurotunnel charge for tickets bought on the day.

I ask because for my upcomming trip, i have the choice of either booking both the departure and return journeys together, but having to make sure i'm definitely back at calais on that particular day, or just being able to wing it and turn up at the ticket office on the day i want to go home on.

Pre-booked tickets seem to be around £30-40 each way

Thanks

It's best to book at least 48 hours before departure, but you don't normally save much by doing it weeks or months in advance. Inside 48 hours, and especially 24 hours, I've seen gouging online (e.g. price doubles, or more). I've never tried to buy a ticket at the barrier.

Bear in mind that you can alter your booking. If you want to change the date, you only have to pay the difference in price.

Also, you can still travel on the same booking even if you turn up 2 hours late. There's some built-in flexibility.

When touring for more than a week, I normally don't book the return until I have clearer plans for when exactly I'm going back.

The best way to save money is to travel on a day and at a time that other people aren't. Swings and roundabouts though, you pay for convenience.

I recently had to buy a ticket on the day after trying to take my return leg without using my outward journey (its cheaper to buy a return than a single). I paid £80 for the pleasure.

Thanks for the responses.

I'll be going and coming back in early and late September respectively, so i'd hope fewer people would be travelling then what with the holidays having finished, but i'd not be opposed to an early start to get tickets cheaper.

I don't fancy paying upwards of £80 for a ticket, so i may just have to find somewhere with wifi or computermeybobs when i'm a day or two from calais and buy a ticket online.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Might be worth booking the return anyway - not sure how common it is, but for a trip we did last year in September I ended up paying more for a pre-booked single (calais-folkstone) than I had for the original return ticket which I was unable to use as we ferried uk-france in the end. (Return part was invalid if the outbound train wasn't used Rolling Eyes)...

They're also adjustable within a certain period if you know the dates change prior to you leaving, so you could book it now and adjust it nearer the time possibly? Not sure if you can adjust the return date once the outbound leg has already been used.

They let us change our return last year when we had to come back early from holiday. Just phoned them and they sorted it to a crossing the next day. They offered certain times that we could have for no charge or pay the difference for others.

I've always found them to be helpful and much more flexible than the ferry.

Out and back within 2 consecutive days, booked before 11pm the day before is from £24
out and back within 5 days, around £56
out and back longer than 5 days and it's about £80

book after 11pm on the day before you leave and you can double the above prices.

Turn up at the booth with no booking and you'll be looking at £80 each way

I've turned up many times and paid at the barrier - albeit in a car
You pay the prevailing 'Flexi-Plus' price

Much cheaper to just book 2 return trips and use the outward leg only. Be warned though, to use the return leg you must use the outward leg.

If you can.

We just booked for our Euro trip in July and I tried to do exactly that. Shows day/short break fare as sold out but normal returns could be booked.

In their t&c's. If you don't use the return trip, they can charge you the single trip rate for the trips.

I've gotten back to the tunnel late a couple of times and got the ferry back instead, sod paying the flexi posh, more money than sense rate.

Hmmmmm, how are they on one-ways?
I might like to come back that way next week.

Thankfully that's never happened to me and I've done it about 6-8 times over the last 2 years. I'd recommend it

Rubbish. Tickets used to be much cheaper but now they all seems to be in the £54 region.
