Pressing out a yoke stem - DIY

Hi All

Anyone done this ? Thinking of try to rig something up using a bottle jack and steel frame - other suggestions appreciated.

don't think a bottle jack will be man enough, those things are a real big interference fit, take some serous weight to press them out.

Why do you want to press it out anyway?

I wanted to have the bottom yoke of my dirt bike reanodised to a different colour so I needed to press out the centre stem.They are only an interference fit so I just went to a local car garage and borrowed their press.Took five minutes.

My "20t press" came with a standard 20t bottle jack - useful for lifting the truck without worry.

Don't bother with a fly press. It's a production tool used for punching holes or other features in thin sheet steel. The number of the press usually indicates the tonnage, and even a No4 press is a big lump of iron. They are expensive to buy, cumbersome, use a lot of room and require a very heavy bench to support them. Oh and to pass a long item though the press requires a big hole in the bench and space underneath.

On the other hand a 6 ton hydraulic press is quite cheap, light, has a fairly small footprint and is much more versatile. Of course if you have some fabrication skills and a supply of scrap you could make a 10-20ton press for little money.
