When I push my ZX6, the front wheel seems make some "friction" sounds.. is that normal? Am I meant to be oiling or greasing the wheels?

It's most likely the brake pads touching the discs and quite normal.

If you're unsure ask someone who is capable of holding a bike steady and check for play in the wheel bearings.
Grease is used on the spindle mainly to aid insertion and extraction, other than that you don't oil or grease the wheels. Smile

Thanks.

How do I check for play in wheel bearings?

Brake pads are always touching the disc, which can make noise, and is normal. The disc should not get warm if its not being used - ride a couple miles using only rear brake to test, if it cold, front brake is normal.

Worth checking the bearings occasionally - with front wheel off the ground check there is no play. When you next have wheel out, remove the outer seal from each bearing to check they have adequate grease and no rust. Do not let any dirt get in.

Sorry, stupid question coming: Should I be taking the wheels off? I've never had occasion to do this, when would I take off the wheels?

When you change tyres.. You can change brake pads with the wheels on.

You can do it without taking the wheels off. Just stick a hammer inverted under the swing arm and onto the side stand and try rock the wheels.

As above wheel only comes out for tires, bearings, fork or chain service.

If there is *any* noise from bearings you should get the wheel out to inspect them, but its almost certainly from brake.
