Hello all.

Long time no post!

So, went to see Disclosure Saturday night in Manchester. We're in Sheffield. Me and the gf get open returns hoping to get a train before midnight. Silly us don't check last train times (though it seems Saturday night has the earliest last train! WTF?!)

So we're like, shit. Look at other potential ways of getting back, or hotel etc. There's no buses or trains until 6am, Hotel/similar would be near £100 for the night and we both wear monthly contact lenses and no way of buying a case and solution, meaning either sleep with them in or lose them...

So we check uber. Eventually we decide to use it and get the fare estimate of £50 - £80. Fine, fair enough.

Get the cab and start making our merry way. About 5/10 minutes in starts asking about the normal way to get to Sheffield... Thought that would be obvious! He starts chatting to a colleague in their language so obvously don't understand a thing. Later on says the snake pass has been closed because of high wind? Apparently, his colleague had to turn back and then get on the m62. So that's the way we head. M62 was closed off a certain portion so we get a detour and then back on it and then straight to Sheffield.

Ended up with a bill for £107 and it took early 2 hours to get back.

I've attached the map of the route he took us...

When he first mentioned the pass being closed because of high wind, I found it a bit weird. I googled it and have found no mention ever of the pass being closed because of wind? Only ever because of accidents or road works. But there seems to be no mention of the pass having been closed Saturday night.

As I'm not a local (gf is at uni in Sheffield, I live in Watford) I know basically nothing, so before I go to Uber with this, is the pass generally closed for reasons like this? Or even any other road? I;ve seen signs before, but never a closed road...

Went to see Brit Floyd in Manchester on Saturday

Bloody nightmare getting back - the motorway was a continuous 50mph with average speed cams for what seemed forever.

Then they'd closed off the M62 and had to detour via the A1 to Ferrybridge and then back on the M62.

Yeah... Not like I mentioned that in the third sentence. Still don't understand why Saturday of all nights has the earliest last train... Sunday had a 23:15 while Saturday is 22:30. And during the week is also later?

We didn't know anyone being in Manchester!

Snake pass is always closed as soon as there's any wind or rain, it does like to flood.

I was doing the opposite trip on Saturday afternoon, Leeds to Cheshire. Torrential rain, heavy traffic and average speed cameras everywhere meant it took about 2 and a half hours. Luckily was going over for a piss up so cheered myself up with lots of beer.

Maybe it's the voice of youth speaking? But don't you just mong about in the train station overnight and get the morning train with your open return?

11pm to 6am is only 7 hours?! I'd take 7 hours of monging over shelling out 100 quid (granted you thought it would be 50-80 originally). I literally just go to sleep on the floor at airports or coach stations when waiting for a connection. Done it at Victoria coach station loads of times.

He did cut the corner off through Huddersfield to join the M62, gone an odd way into Manchester in my opinion, I would have come off the M62 towards Oldham and dropped down that way to avoid the roadworks on the M'way instead of turning North off the M'way

I'd have then cut into Manchester directly from there instead of driving half way round it just to use Mancunian Way.

Other than the bits you might not know without a spot of local knowledge he's not done you too bad.

I live North of Manchester and my parent's live North of Sheffield so I'm familiar with a few routes back and forth

When I read of the OP's plight, I was genuinely troubled....So much so that I made a few calls and the outcome is that me and a few buddies are considering bunging a tunnel under The Pennines to ensure that The OP is never similarly inconvenienced.

£6bn for a project in the north? You're having a laugh right? The UK government doesn't spend money outside the M25.

I went to a place in town for some stuff the other day there. On the way back a train leaving Hull for Bridlington tripped the gates, lights and bloody bells at the level crossing. Traffic were queued up for blooming minutes we were.

£6bn to get from Manchester to Sheffield faster - surely money could be better spent elsewhere. I'd rather peeps set off half an hour earlier than the Government spunks £6bn of my money on what I can only assume is a sweetener to a non-tory demographic.

Tunnels worry me. All it would take is those nice chaps from IS to jack-knife a waggon full of toxic, flammable shit at either end, set them alight then sit back and watch the fumes do Allah's work. Not a good idea...

I believe in the 70's there was fear of the IRA hitting Spaghetti Junction (M6etc, Barton High level (M60) and Dartford Tunnel at the same time,

That'd have fucked transport links up a bit

30 minutes saving time, I spend more time on the lav. They could spend that money on the roads we have and make them super grippy and super smooth. Sort the drainage out while they are at it.
