I bought a bottle of oil (I didnt even have one). I need to top up some oil but I dont want to put too much!
How much should I put before checking the oil level with the stick? Is it advisable to check the oil while cold?

I need to get the little CBF125 working before it gets its due service!

how much does the bike hold?

*edit* 1.1 litres supposedly

if its empty, stick half a litre in an recheck

you need to check when its cold as when you come in from a run the oil is still all over the engine, letting it cool drops it back into the sump (what you are measuring)

My dads old Triumph Trophy has a Max line on the dipstick but also another line 2-3" down saying "1 pint to full" This makes it very easy to know how much to add. I don't know why modern bikes do not do this.

Honda have a way of checking did-stick oil level.

The dip stick is unscrewed.
Wipe off any oil on the dip-stick.
Put the dip-stick back in but do not screw it in.
Pull it out and check the oil is in the hatched area.

Cold engine cold oil the oil should reach the top of the hatched area.

The area between top (High) and bottom (Low) is the safe 'range'. It is not required to add oil. Below this mark there is danger/risk of oil starvation.
Above the mark there is danger/risk of heavy oil consumption and if extreme engine damage.

There may be an issue of checking level on or off the stand but you will have to check your handbook for that or search the Net.
