I am looking to buy a new bike. I am interested in the Kawasaki ER-6F or the er-6n or the Yamaha xj6. The prices are around the same around 7000 euros. The only thing that puts me off the kawasaki is the 50cc more because of the insurance I have to pay around 70 euros more than a 600 which is a rip off. I like the xj6 but if I'm fed up with inline 4 noise I like the lowdown torque of a 2 cylinder. If the kawasaki have been made 600cc I definitely choose the kawasaki. The kawasaki gearbox is very smooth compared to the yamaha. I also like the Honda cb500x but it costs the same as the others and the engine is low on power so it is out.

What are your opinions?

As you say you do not care what engine is in it (except the insurance rate), you shouldn't be buying something just because of the general consensus of complete strangers on the internet. Also, if you keep the original exhaust system, even the xj will have enough low/mid-range torque there, as it was tuned to work this way. Wink

Go sit, have a test ride on various motorcycles before you buy something.

I wouldn't buy an ER6 for the torque, because it doesn't have any. It's an inline 2 cyinder rather than a V twin. Personally, I'd rather have an inline four.

IMO FZ6 S2 faired version is a much better bike with more power (FZ6 has 98hp vs 72hp for ER6 and 76hp for XJ6 and 72hp for MT07) much better seat and weather protection, and looks way better too. If you want 600cc bike that is your best bet for all around bike:

https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/designcafe/en/about-bikes/sport-touring/index.aspx?view=article&id=442637&page=2

What confuses me slightly you are looking at both faired and naked bikes? What is the purpose of the bike you are buying?

No offence to anybody but MT07 is highly overrated and cheaply made bike with awful seat and non existing weather protection. Its fine for half an hour blast and few wheelies and that is it all. Do not trust everything you read in bike magazines, they get paid to write it Laughing

Interesting opinion on the 07. A guy at work travels in on one all year round and it seems more than up to the job. Certainly looks and feels better quality than the GSXF that it parks by the side of by some way and it doesn't feel much different to other bikes I've been around.

Iirc there *is* a comfort seat option, now. Which of course suggests that punter feedback has been something along the lines of aaargh my arse, for the love of god my sweet arse, where's my arse, I can't feel my cheeks and ringpiece, etc.etc.!!

But even so, if there were a few more second hand with a nice big hit of depreciation, I'd be in the market. Not to say they aren't a great price new - just that I'm a total 4 be 2. What can I say. I moved to Yorkshire ten years ago. When in Rome innit luv.

Agreed - except I'd extend that to *any* bike. There's a load of unused, mollycoddled toys of any variety and purpose waiting out there for us cheap bastards.

Where is the xj6 made and is it as comfortable and light as the fz6?

Do as we all do, go and have a look at bikes you are considering. Have sit on them, have a test ride if possible, consider. Thumbs Up

Comfort is a very subjective thing, I for instance found all the motorcycles, I have ever had a go on, comfortable. So I would assume the XJ6 is as comfortable as the FZ6. Both commuters, both made to cover distance. Those two are no purpose built pocket rockets, if you know what I mean.

That's funny, because I'm not comfortable on any bike I've owned, I'm constantly fidgeting trying to get all the limbs in the right position. I have come to the conclusion that tall means I need tall bikes for comfort, but tall bikes usually come with big engines, I like little engines. I'm caught in a catch 22. Rolling Eyes

I'm also tall and I ride small bikes every now and then. I used to own a CB-1, 200 miles at fast pace was not a problem for me. If it's your wrists that hurt, you are sitting on the motorcycle wrong. If it's you back, time to start do push-ups when you don't ride, to firm your back muscles. Smile

Perhaps he meant "sitting on the wrong motorcycle"? Thinking

Really, there's no need to scrunch yourself up or wiggle your arse in the air when there are plenty of perfectly comfortable upright bikes out there.

This is true but somewhat tinged with the knowledge that you found a CBR600F uncomfortable Laughing

Yes, I did. It was a tangible relief to get back on the Tractor.

Should I pretend otherwise, or embark on some training program to force myself to fit the bike? Thinking

Could not agree more! For example BMW RS1200RS gets the most excellent reviews ever. When I test rode it was the most awuful bike position I've ever got.

I need a second bike to use it on sundays and have some fun with friends with it. I don't need a 600 as such. I am a bit interested in the 2015 Hyosung GD250N or the 2015 Kawasaki 250SL which is 3000 euros less than the XJ6 and 3600 euros less for the Hyosung. For everyday commuting I have a ybr125 which does the job very good. I don't have long distance to go to work 22miles back and forth altogether. I never test rod the 250's but I rode a 2004 fz6s which was a beast and too much power for me although I have been riding the ybr125 for more than 3 years. I need something in between. I test ride a 2002 honda xr400r which has around 30hp and felt the power was right for me. Should I feel the difference between the 125 and the 250's? Also my friend have a 2015 cb650f. Does he leave me in the dust with a 250?

Buy whatever you like most. 250s are perfectly fine bikes and it will not leave you in the dust as soon you do not do motorway travel. You can enjoy it, you just need to keep the revs a little higher, but some people like that.

And because you will keep the bike close to its limits some people may say this is the perfect way to become better rider. As soon you master 250 later you will be better rider on bigger bikes if you decide to buy one.

What I like in 200-300cc bikes is fuel consumption. For example Kawasaki 250SL has about 80mpg. Looks like perfect city/B roads bike to me.

So yes if you like it when test ride it by all means go for it Thumbs Up
