Right, apologies for the simplicity of this but i'm not twigging something, and i don't have a manual to tell me what's normal.
Just got a 2003 GPZ 500S, when i run it, the oil window empties out almost completely, then when i stop it and leave it on the centre stand the oil fills the entire window...above the max level*.
Obviously when i saw the latter i started trying to draw some out using a tube, maybe 100 - 200ml but made no difference in the level window. Now i'm not sure if i've taken too much out, the engine started smoking when i last started it up but that might just be some stray parrafinbeing flung off the chain onto the casing.
*Strangely this how to guide says it can be either between the lines, OR completely full...then what's the point?

Are you sure you check the oil right? Is it really supposed to be checked on the center stand? Are you sure the motorcycle is straighten up properly? We, without the center stand, know that tilting the motorcycle 10mm left or right can mean empty or overfilled looking at the check glass.
As Roger says, drain it, fill up with proper amount. IF you are sure you know how to check the oil level. We have met quite a few stupid people here. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Emptying when the engine starts is good. That means your oil pumpis sucking the oil up and pumping it to the top of the engine.
Oil should be between the lines at the top and bottom of the sight glass with the engine warm but not running and the bike straight and level.
I'll echo Roger. If you just bought it, service it. Oil, and filters at a minimum. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
