Ok so I'm looking at a car currently that has an SRS light on. This is due to a new steering wheel being installed. The car is a 2004 UK car.

Will this be a fail? It also has no cat however I can bodge that in. What I don't want is to have to find a stock wheel and airbag. Sad

Yes, an SRS indicating a fault is an MOT failure.

There is a very good reason that one of the first things I did with my track car is replace the manufactures cluster with a SPA Design item Twisted Evil

Hi

Think it is a failure. There is an exemption for heavily modified vehicles, but a different steering wheel doesn't count as a heavy mod

All the best

Yes it's a fail, just remove the bulb and it will pass. What car is it?

Technically it shouldn't with the bulb removed - all warning lights need to be in working order but will the MOT tester know exactly what should & shouldn't light up on your car.

It will pass if the tester notices it atall.

Reason for rejection:
A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp indicating a system malfunction.

There is no fail for the light not coming on. Thumbs Up

With bulb removed it will pass with an advisory.

The other option is to chop the plug to the air bag off (loom side), and bridge it with a 501 bulb (Standard sidelight bulb).

The 5w of resistance tricks the car into thinking the airbag is present and working, so the light cycles for the 4 to 5 seconds during ignition start up, then goes out. Thumbs Up

Naughty little trick there for ya.

So after wading through this it tuns out if Joe public asks the DVLA for a document the outlines what does & doesn't pass an MOT you get a bit of paper which is effectively a load of bollox.

It's the DVLA, you didn't really expect anything more did you?
They only speak 'Bollox'.

My daughter's car is missing the driver's airbag and it passes every year because the led fell off the dash cluster.

I don't know what you mean, it's spelt out quite plainly what they will fail it on. If the lamp is lit it fails, if the lamp is not lit it doesn't fail.

If it's been fitted with an aftermarket steering wheel that clearly has no provision for an airbag, does it not fall under RFR 1, "An airbag obviously missing or defective"?

Depends how you interpret it. If it has a standard steering wheel with the cover blown off, the bag is obviously missing. If it has an aftermarket steering wheel fitted with no provision for an airbag, how can one be obviously missing?

My bike has no ABS pump fitted - does it have faulty ABS?

Method of inspection 1 states airbags fitted as as original equipment.

Would a replacement steering wheel negate that?

Its a confusing area,(the manual isn't much help) some tester say pass and advise and some say fail. Best thing is to ask the local VE. If it was me and I had any doubt I would pass and advise as we are always told to do.

Lots of helpful stuff on here for testers https://mtaeta.info/

Cheers guys, its a Civic Type R, EP3 era with a bit of work done and 225hp with a modified EK9 LSD so its had a bit of work but is stupidly low miles and stupidly cheap, owned by a car fanatic who works with a friend. Its not been bodged and shit so would be a nice car to run along side the wagon. Laughing

His friend does MOTs so is obviously glancing over it, but its going to be obvious with my own MOT place. I can't drive to his in Dorking every time I want an MOT Laughing

If you buy it the light can be turned off easily enough. I suspect most testers wouldn't even give a shit about the aftermarket steering wheel. Just avoid fast fit style places that are on bonus to nit pick.

You will need a resistor kit from ebay, then fit it to the disconnected wires where the airbags missing or before the clock spring. Then reset it via the laptop if it has the capabilites.

If your software works through an 'ELM327' device connected to the OBD Socket - then probably not, as the SRS system usually has a protocol that the chip doesn't support.

Had a similar problem myself back in October, due to removing the passenger seat without disconnecting the battery first.

MOT station told me that they look up the SRS Light timings for each vehicle and if the light comes on, but doesn't go off in the specified time, it's a fail.

If the light doesn't come on at all, it's just an advisory.

I had to borrow a STAR to reset the SRS system, as it didn't even show a DTC code on the OBD software I have (Torque Pro and Autel MaxiDiag).

Most SRS systems don't automatically reset when you fix the problem, so even if you bypass the airbag, you will still need to clear the fault light (or remove it).
