Thoughts R6 as a first bike?

Hi guys,

As a new rider recently passed I'm looking into getting a R6 or zx6r for a first bike.

What are your thoughts on these for an inexperienced rider?

What would be the pros and cons of having one?

Very focused bikes for the street and will sting novices for slight mistakes. However you will get someone on soon saying they started on one and were fine.. How much biking experience do you have?

As good as any other bike if you like and can get on with the riding position.i sound like an old bastard now, but these days I'd prefer an FZ6 over either sports bike.

Not ridden any properly sporty bikes (don't like the riding position either) but personally 110 bhp isn't any scarier than less powerful bikes (50-80 bhp for example). They all have enough power and weight to make sure things end badly if you f**k up.

Oh a guy at worked went from a Vespa to a ZX6R and survived

From a new rider who went through looking for a bike recently

Pros
- Very capable chassis makes it easier to ride around your mistakes.
- You have to go looking for the power so it doesn't take you by surprise
- Low weight makes for easier paddling

Cons
- Easy to find your self at silly speeds chasing the engine power/sound
- So capable it will bite hard when you get in over your depth
- Not conducive to letting you relax when you're on the daily grind

Have you actually rode one? Chassis doesn't make it easy to ride round mistakes it bites you for them..

Out of interest, which year bikes were you thinking of getting ?...

I've noticed the kwak has been given another 30 horses from where I last noticed .....

I think 100 bhp is quite manageable for your "first big bike", 130 is a touch punchy....

My experience is limited to a cb650f that I did the DAS on. So yeah... Relatively in experienced.

I'm looking at getting an older bike. I'm looking anywhere from 05-10.

A bikes only as quick as you ride it.600's are pretty manageable if you ride within your limits,they are not scary fast.Although they may be a bit to a new rider.

I went from a 125 to an RG500 after passing my test at 20,but i had been riding dirt bikes since i was 10 and on the road since 16,so had a good amount of experience.

Older zx6r would be a half decent bet in your position.

Have you thought about an older gsxr 600 ?, my mate jumped one on after his test and had no worries.

Speaking of worries, what does you insurance look like on those bikes you suggested ?, is there not an argument to spend a year on a sv650 ?......

I wasn't really considering traffic situations, would hate to use one I. Traffic tbh. More classic beginner mistakes, poor throttle control in corners etc

I'm of the view that a 600 sports IS too much for a first bike.

It does all depend on how you ride obviously, but I would never recommend one for an inexperienced rider.

When doing my DAS course someone was using their own R6 for some reason. He dropped it during Mod 1 practice, then went onto fail his Mod 1.

From the small amount of research I've done i seem to be looking at around £500-£700 for the insurance. As expected for the first year I guess...

The sv650 seems ok, although it's not the prettiest

I liked my old SV. My other half is of the view that it was a better looking bike than my current one. She is, of course, wrong.

Went from an NSR125 to a ZX6R J2 after passing my test at 17.

It was brilliant fun so on that basis I whole heartedly recommend it. To this day, I still regret selling it.

Pros: 100bhp+ at your disposal.
Cons: People telling you that you're going to die on it.

You'll be fine just don't go full Rossi style straight off the bat. Get a good feel for the bike and it's behaviour first and progressively get faster and buy some crash bungs, you'll most likely drop it if it's your first bike.


Also, a bit unrelated to the original topic, but why are you looking for bikes at a dealers? Much better deals to be had in private sales

the bike only goes as fast as you decide to ride it, i went from a scooter to a honda hornet 600 loved the bike and obviously being eager i rode quite fast alot of the time but i didnt have to i chose to, skill comes from practicing and experiance that youll gain when riding, good luck with what ever you choose bro

I'm initially looking at dealers as they are easy to go into and have a look around, sit on a few of the bikes so I can get the general feel of my seating position.

Excuse my lack of knowledge but what is the green wire on the bike from the picture I uploaded? I'm sure it's something simple...
