OK, so here goes,

I seem to be the only guy in the UK I know, who rides an ST1100 every day at my age. AWESOME BIKE Very Happy . I'd literally rather ride it than my ZZR1400 (for sale soon). Comfortable, smooth, powerful enough without the fear of death or licence loss (ZZR comes to mind again) and maybe most importantly, will take the other half, in comfort, without too much issue. Minimum of 300 miles a week, every week. commuting and leisure (is there even a difference?)

UNTIL RECENTLY... Confused

When we started going on more trips/ tours, it became apparent that it really is more difficult than it should be carrying camping gear and the BOTH of us. It's the tent, sleeping bag, matt and cooking equipment that does it.

SO.. I've been looking at the potential of Goldwings. The GL1200 or maybe the GL1500. though I am on a tight-ish budget.

Has any one has experience owning an st1100 simultaneously with a wing? Is it completely wrong for a 22 year old to be considering this? Are they actually any better for 2 up touring than the Pan? I'd love to be able to tour Europe without one of us moaning every 250 miles about how sore we get.

Thoughts please!

Thanks

Can't comment on a Goldwing, but if you're struggling to fit stuff to your bike, pack lighter or go by car.

it's more the fact the tent / sleeping bag doesn't fit in any top box/ pannier and therefore has to go directly on the rack. and the whole thing becomes a balancing act.

her getting a bike is an awfully good idea.

Are you fucking joking? I can get tent, sleeping bag, fold-up chair and crate of 18 cans of stella (along with cooker, clothing, trainers etc) on the back of an exup. Make the bitch walk.

So, how big a top box do you have on it?

either learn how to pack better or get smaller stuff.

when I were younger and taking part in ten tors we could carry a tent, sleeping bag, a weekends worth of food, spare cloths, sleeping mat into a 40 litre bag and hike 55 miles with it.

unless you are going in the depths of winter at most you are only going to need a 3 season sleeping back which compress down to a tiny size. I could get 2 into each of my oxford material paniers without and expanding them and still have space to spare.

OP, of the four bikes you've named, I've owned three of them (not had a ZZR1400) and I had my 1200 Interstate when I was 20, so you aren't the only one.

Obviously I have no idea how big all your kit is, but if you cant get it on a Wing, you need smaller/less stuff; I think the 1200 top box was 63 litres, the 1500 is bigger, plus the panniers on either are bigger than a Pan.

Personally, I would try hard to stretch to a 1500, it's an infinitely better bike than the 12. They do have a few known faults (there's lots of internet resource to guide you) but a properly sorted one is a joy to own.

Oh and keep in mind there's a lot of bollox talked about Wings, largely by people who haven't even sat on one, let alone lived with one, so ignore them and do your own thing, you won't be disappointed.

I got a 6 man tent, 2 sleeping bags, 3 changes of clothes and some other junk on a Street Triple.

Adding that to a Pan on the way back was so simple. There was room spare. A lot of room spare.

You need to look at what you are taking. It's too much Laughing I did 10 days in Spain on an R1 with soft luggage and never felt I needed more space.

I don't understand how you are failing to fit it all. If you're going with a missus, you've obviously got some pics. Put them up so we can see how the bike and your camping setup is.

People manage to take enough stuff to live for months at a time on a narrow trail bike without much modification.

I'm struggling to see why you need more room?

Bandit 600, 2 up, tent, stove, essentials, food etc for two people fitted fine and was comfortable enough for both of us. We used a pair of soft panniers, tank bag, rucksack and just tied the tent to the pillion grab rail. Even managed to take a lock and bike cover with a fair bit of space left in the tank bag.

"Are they any better for 2 up touring" depends on what you want from your touring. Do you want a bike that is still fun to ride on the nice roads that you'll likely head for or do you want something that you can pack everything but the kitchen sink on.

I would seriously consider the amount of gear you take with you. Do you really need to take as much? Do you really need to camp? There is relatively inexpensive accommodation available. We arrange our accommodation a day or 2 in advance - smartphones and the internet make finding accommodation easier than it's ever been. No camping means you're generally comfier at night and less crap on the bike means you enjoy the riding more.

A few years ago me and my wife spent 2 months travelling on our FJR and we carried much less gear than we would normally take for a fortnight trip. It's amazing how little you actually need to take. Light weight clothing takes up very little space and generally dries very quickly.

Me and my wife aren't particularly young or small but we manage 500 miles a day easily with the bike fully loaded. If we're on motorways we'll generally run 180 - 200 miles between stops or if on "lesser" roads stop every 100 or so.

The Pan European isn't I imagine that different from the FJR1300 in terms of comfort and we manage ok. We do feel it after a long day but sit in a car for hours on end and we also feel a bit stiff.

Personally I don't think a Goldwing is the answer Thumbs Down Wink

edit: Nothing particularly against Goldwings but if your gear won't fit on a Pan then you're just as likely to overload the Goldwing.

your not doing something right, ok granted you have to carry the mrs shit, but if i can carry all i need for 6 weeks on a bandit.
you can surely carry what you need on a pan for a weekend/week.

bigger topbox might be the answer, a gold wing isnt

Goldwings are the mutts nutts.

I have had every size Wing from the 1000 up to the 1800 including trikes at various times and love them.

The 1800 is an amazingly easy bike to ride for something that big. It handles really well.

The 1500 is a nicer looking bike IMO but I warn you, when you come to fit a new rear tyre you have to dimantle the whole back end of the bike, bodywork and all, a fucking nightmare.

However, If you can't fit it in a Pan with a top box, you won't be much better with a Wing.

Where you will be better off is with brownie points from your missus, the Wing pillion seat makes the Pan feel like a lump of wood.

Have you considered a top box with a rack on top to strap the tent to (assuming that's not what you have)?

I ride a Pan, and can't really imagine not having enough space to put stuff in. I also think you would struggle to find a decent Goldwing for similar money to your Pan. Seems a lot of money and hassle just for a little extra luggage space.

I disagree with most actually, you probably could make do with less stuff, but they make a massive variety of bikes for all sorts of purposes, if a wing suits your needs better, why would you not get one?
