Calliper maintainence advice please.

[trickysax]

I've just got my bike back from the local garage following an MoT and some quite major work needed on my front brakes. I ride day-in-day-out back and forward to work all year round. As a result, my bike gets all the usual dirt and salt over the winter.

What's the best thing to use to keep my brakes clean? The calipers needed new seals and were really filthy. How can I reduce any damage to them in future?

Cheers.

Its not about the destination, its the journey that counts.

Hi

If yours is the older 2 pot sliding calipers then they seize up easily, but they are also pretty easy to strip down and clean up.

The pistons can stick, but the more common issue is the caliper sticking on the pins it slides on.

Keep them clean (tooth brush and a can of brake cleaner), but get used to stripping them and lubing the pins

All the best

Katy

I was going to share the same video. Is on the occaisonal maintenance schedule, i recall delboy suggesting twice a year.

My thereabouts weekly schedule is to give the calipers a gentle blast with a hand-pumped garden spray thing. It's not the high pressure of a jetwash, and doesn't appear to remove copper grease from where it should be. Does remove salt, grit and a bit of brake dust.
