PostPosted: 14:36 - 16 Mar 2016    Post subject: Endless Electrical Problems On Speedfight 2 :/ Reply with quote

Hello guys, ive been helping my son fix up a moped he bought off of one of his friends and all is good apart from lights. The headlights and brake lights do work however they are very very dim. The bulb brightness increases if the bike is revved but as soon as it is left to idle the light is virtually non-existent. I don't think that its a problem with the battery as it has been sitting in the garden since sunday now as has only been started a couple of times and it still starts first time with electric start.

Help would be appreciated Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Yes, get a multimeter. You dont need anything fancy, just volts and ohms. Will save you (and us) a lot of time fault finding.

Under £5 from eBay or Amazon.

Or you can start randomly replacing parts that will cost you a lot, lot more.

How's the electrolyte level in the battery cells? Free to check, pennies to sort with distilled water.

With the bike running and lights on im getting around 13.5, although it did just notice when i started the bike up this time the idle voltage was around 12.8/13v. Think i was revving the bike when i was getting 14v

I have been doing alot of reading and from what I can find the problem could be the regulator/rectifier. But then ive read conflicting information that suggests the headlights are not connected to the battery and are instead connected to the alternator. I have found a video on youtube of the problem that I am having aswell if that helps?

Okay so i've done a bit more reading and found out that the headlight and brake lights are most probably run off of the stator/alternator. So does this mean I need a new one?

I wouldn't have thought so, as it is charging the battery.

Anyone got a wiring diagram for this because if the battery is charging OK I can't see a reason to have the lights running direct off the alternator which is what it sounds like it is doing.
