Hello, my father's indestructible '00 Seat Toledo 1.9TDi, seems to have developed an issue, that I can't seem to find the culprit of. The noise seems to come from the front left wheel. When you go straight it's quiet, but the moment you slightly turn the wheel left, the noise starts. There is no vibration and the noise is a constant hum/scraping noise (me engrish no well again).

It doesn't do the sound when stationary, turing the wheel left or right, so it's not the power steering pump, although we checked the level of the fluid, just in case. Took the front left wheel off, to see if anything became lose or any grind markings anywhere, and we found nothing.
Also, as the issue does not show when vehicle is stationary, I don't suspect the serpentine belt, and/or the pulleys and tensioners.

The wheel bearing seems to be alright and the issue does not emit the typical whining sound of a worn bearing.

A friend of mine implied it could be the tyre making the noise, but why now and how? Mechanic saw the car and found nothing as well. Thinking

Any thoughts?

is the wear on the front discs similar on both sides?

I ask because the mondeo I did recently squealed on right handers at low speed turned out to be a knackered caliper.

the discs were wearing uneven which was the tell tale for me.

Mudflap, body moulding etc. fouling the tyre when steering.

CV joint on the road out.

If it only happens when you turn then it is your wheel bearing Im afraid,
wheel off and 32mm socket, I bet you manage a tighten, then replace asap before the bearing does collapse,.

CV joint has those symptoms in my experience.

I've always found wheel bearings to make a more constant grumble regardless of steering position...

Jack it up. Shake the wheels at 9 and 3 o clock. And again at 6 and 12. Should be no play. Spin the wheels by hand and listen for a rumble.

Shake the cv shafts. Up and down. Helps diagnose slack/ worn joints.

Other than that its rotational. So usual things apply. Brake calipers mounts and discs. Abs rings and etc. Plastic touching stuff can sound loud when magnified by a car chassis. Inner arches come loose sometimes.

Other option is gearbox. Check fluid level. Differential could be shot maybe. Explains why straight is fine. Could just need fluid.Look under and see if bottom of gearbox is wet.

May sound daft, but check the opposite wheel bearing and the opposite coil spring. What you see may well surprise you...

So, it could be all of the above, as you all have suspected (not the migrants). My mechanic says I/my father should drive it more, so the noise gets more noticeable, so he can tell where it is coming from. He says he could just change the bearings, but he's not 100% sure it would solve the problem. So more kilometers to be done, in order to determine what the culprit is. Thumbs Up

Just got back from a 600km trip, the car drives and sounds the same.

Power Steering Doofur. Relief Valve for left steer blowing off. May sound like scraping.
Grasping at Straws now.
