So I've looked through the Haynes, I've failed to get back into the R1 owners group, anyone on here know where the brake light fuse is for a 2004 (5vy) R1?

have a look under the front left hand fairing.

There is a little black box which contain red, blue and yellow fuses (with two legs).
In the lid of the box you will see the list of fuses' functions.
And in the box, you've some spare fuses.

It might share with something else like the indicators, check those.

Indicators are working perfectly so if it did, the fuse would be sound and we've already tested the lights, the switches, the wiring so short of bad voodoo the lights should work Sad

I just did some digging and it does indeed share the indicator fuse.
Maybe your bulb is blown? Either that or track the wiring is all good.

Just reducated myself to double check I am using a multi meter correctly... I am. So I am at a loss.

Only thing I could think it could be is a cumilative slight resistance across everthing from switch, down wiring all the way to bulb holder that means the force is not strong enough....

..not sure how likely that is?

Have you checked there is a voltage at the switch?

Just to check, find the brake light wiring, follow it down and connect a 12v source all the way down. Basically just try giving the brake cluster 12v directly.

cluster has 12v,

Just looking for a second hand rear light cluster as that is the only thing I think it could be, it has Volts, even got my spare out and plugged that in, that doesn't work as a brake light either but I cannot remember if that worked or was broken, it was replaced due to a fixing clip being broken off of it.

I hate electrics Laughing Not much help I know. Feeding it 12v directly from a battery doesn't illuminate it, as in physically removing the battery and cluster, giving it 12v?

Just tested the light cluster and that works, it has also made me realise that the brake light is on all the time, I have already removed the front brake switch and bypassed it, I removed the bypass and the rear light remained on brake light function, so whilst I have been checking for power to everything I have not checked the rear brake switch is turning off. duh, fingers crossed after lunch that is what it is.

...seriously hoping it is not something wrong with the ECU!

It won't be ECU, it will definitely be either bulb or wiring related. ECU only really deals with the shit jobs, fueling and sparking.

The tail light is on all the time on this model. The brake light shouldn't be. Are you sure the brake light is on and not the tail light?

The tail light belongs to the headlight fuse, not the indicator fuse, and the fuse can be confirmed to be working correctly if your dash is lighting up and your tail light/side lights come on.

The brake light belongs to the indicator fuse, as from the indicator fuse 12v is supplied to both of the brake switches. If you remove the indicator fuse, the tail light should still function.

The front and rear brake light switches are not linked, and receive a separate 12v input each. When either switch is closed, the 12v passes through a shared yellow wire. So if either of these switches is faulty and causing your brake light to turn on, this single yellow wire will have 12v passing through. Otherwise, when the brakes are not being used, this yellow wire will be dead.

The yellow wire connects directly to a 3-pin connector block for the rear tail/brake light.

If you apply 12v to the blue (or is it purple? I am colour blind) wire directly to the tail light assembly, and connect up the earth, your tail light should come on. If you then additionally supply 12v to the yellow wire, your brake light should also come on.

Your ECU doesn't play any role in this circuit.
