I bought an ex training school bike rather than a shiny one for my partner to learn on. Having got it I now have the urge to make it as nice as possible for her (within reason). The engine block looks a little worse for wear, dull and tarnished and spoils what is a solid bike.

I don't want to spend too long on it really, so can I just mask it up and spray this on it?

I'd be more inclined to use

I'd also replace the engine bolts with stainless after you have done it, it is a cheap easy way of making a bodge engine spray job look better. If you take them out one and a time and replace them it is nice and easy.

Ebay may do a kit for your bike, failing that take one out measure the diameter and thread and get an assortment.

If you mask well, prep well, and put in fresh bolts it can look like a big improvement. Thumbs Up

To be honest I just want it to look better, not perfect, just so your eye isn't drawn towards it. It's not worth spending loads of time on Thumbs Up

It's one of those things you could do it in 5 minutes and it would look gash, do it in 1-2 hours and it would look good.

I'd just degrease thoroughly and get rid of anything flaking with a wire brush.

What I did on a BMW - well known for engine corrosion - was
1. Degrease with sugar soap (cheap but very effective) and lots hot water from a pump up garden spray
2. Remove all the loose paint with a blunt screwdriver and a Dremel thing
3. "Sandblasted" all over with sodium bicarbonate - NOT anything more gritty. This will make sound old paint and the metal body well keyed to accept new paint. Wash off the bicarb with water. Easy.
4. Apply LOTS of thin coats of Hammerite smooth. I bought a cheapo airbrush (Machine Mart) rather than use a rattle can because I could then dilute the paint to give nice thin coats (about 8).

I found aluminium cooking foil then masking tape ideal for masking off all the pipes, wires etc around the engine, and stuffed screwed up bits in the bolt head sockets

The sodablasting can be done at minimal cost (so long as you can access a compressor of course). See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vuENNhOMQs

Oriental supermarkets sell 2-5kg bags of bicarbonate. I used about 1.5kg

4 years later the paint is still sound

Jesus wept. I'd be screaming the walls down at my dealer if my Trophy engine looked like that BMW, however old it was.

That is disgusting. Thumbs Down
