I want to convert what is currently an unused study/bedroom into a small media room. I know the room is too small to be ideal but after reading several speaker manuals I've come up with the setup below. Obviously the sub's position is subject to getting the room setup and finding out where sounds best.

From what I can tell going for a centre speaker in such a small room is pointless but what about the rear speakers?

1) Put the sub IN the sofa. Twisted Evil

2) Consider a projector for epic win. Especially if you can get some good light control in there.

My projector is mounted 3m back and fully zoomed in is giving me a 140cm x 80 image on my chimney breast. But it'll go out (optically) to 200cm x 112. That's the equivalent of a 90" TV.

Just saying...

2nd the projector idea, why would you even bother with a TV in a dedicated media room?

I'd have both. Faux wall 1ft from the wall at the back, mount the TV inside the wall so it's flush, put the subs and equipment below and make the speakers /subs flush with the TV.

Electronic screen above that comes down over the TV.

Or just settle for the projector on its own, ceiling mounted.

The sub location should be irrelevant, the bass is such a pure tone that it's hard to distinguish where it is coming from anyway.

This only applies if it's a true LFE (i.e. low frequency effects) setup. If the sub is doing bass management as well (putting some of the main L R signal through it to compensate for small left/right speakers) then it will become noticeable.

Also consider getting at least an LCR setup, the centre speaker will lock the dialogue into position coming from the screen and will sound a lot more cinema-like than having a phantom centre from your Left/Right speakers.

Every time I've setup speaks I've found that bad sub placement can lead to certain frequencies booming or disappearing, this generally is more of a problem in smaller rooms.

I can tell the difference.

About the sub... chuck it in the corner of the room behind the sofa.

I don't know if your AVR has a similar feature but, I can plug in a small mic and the AVR will configure the sound settings for each speaker to ensure sound is delivered to the ear at the same time.
