Hi all.
The local garage owner has offered me this one, too much hassle for him to sort. Its an arrangement I have with him.

So, its registered as a '91, so the last of the breed. Mono shocked looks to be all there, alloy a bit dingy, carbs need cleaning.
Strange thing I've noticed as I've looked it over is that it has the housing for the field coil alternator behind the engine, but has a permanent magnet one fitted in the L/H side crank-case. All looks factory too.
Stranger things have happened I suppose in a models run.
So, anything known about them, I know its long in the tooth but it seems honest enough.

A mate had one years ago. Good, solid bike from what I remember. Only thing we had to sort was rear wheel bearings (twice if I recall)...

One of the things Yamaha were keen to publicise, was the narrowness of the XJ series of engines, achieved by moving the generator from the end of the crank, to behind the cylinder block.

What should be behind the left hand crank cover, is the pick up coil.

If you feel the need to balance the carbs, to get it right you will need to make, or otherwise acquire a YICS tool, without it you will get false readings.

Hi and thanks for the feedback.
Given it a good dose of looking at. Carbs off and cleaned, started right up. I see what you mean about the YICS gubbins, its nothing more than linking the carb inlets together via the balancing outlets. A bit of research says it makes a bit more power with them blanked off!
Anyway, balanced up fine, smooth and quiet especially for an air-cooled engine
Still a bit puzzled by the two alternator mounts and cant find any info on it, it should have the field coil unit behind the engine, the layshaft is in there as is the drive gear off the clutch housing Would make a perfect take off point for a supercharger..... Hmmm.....
I'll clean and polish, stick an MOT on her and cross my fingers that it will be worth £500, otherwise I've wasted a couple of weeks works

Cheers

I had one for a year. Was a solid bike. Most of the instruments and idiot lights didn't work (well, the rev counter worked in heavy rain) but the speedo did so meh. The exhaust rusted through at the collector and one of the down pipe collars rusted away but I managed to get three of the four down pipes out of the collector and bodge it all back together with paste and good intentions (and new header collars). The only other thing I had to do was regular freeing/cleaning of the front brakes and I had to drill the headlight mounting screws out to change the bulb. Other than that it had over 54,000 miles on it and ran as sweet as anything.

The 'pre divi' is quite popular in a certain race series at the moment. FZ600's are also used as its in effect, the same engine.

I had one. Learnt to get my knee down on track with it. Would have another over a Diversion any day.
