So I'm on the lookout for a shed about 8x10ish. Local place near me wants about £1200 for a scandi-looking effort, which is of course hilariously overpriced. The only thing they have on their side is that it's free delivery and should it end up looking or indeed being crap, I can happily go and abuse them and get monies refunded face to face.

But, I know you can get plastic sheds too. Some look pretty good, with metal structures underneath, bolting to concrete or with separate floors etc. This is what I'm considering.

My use case is that I'm going to be knocking my garage down and rebuilding it bigger, so will have a short term (months) use for it as bike storage but longer term will revert to being a shed / workshop. Garden is secure-ish, only entrance is through the house but I guess if you wanted to get in you could hop the next door neighbour's fence etc.

Are there any options I'm not considering?

Wooden shed everytime.

If it was California maybe a metal or plastic shed but it's high humidity here and a wooden shed will breathe and generally be more 'drafty'.

Why not take your time and build your own. They're very simple to construct. Or go for a cheap flatpack one and accept it'll only last 6-10 years.
£1200 is a serious amount for a 10x8.

Metal and plastic = condensation. Especially with a nice hot bike inside. I'd say wood, it's the same reason vans are ply
lined, to take the knocks and bumps and also to prevent condensation inside the back.

My 12x8 shed was 600 quid delivered and assembled from a place in the the Midlands. Very happy with it, got it from these guys.
Paid cash on delivery. https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/atsheds2000?_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2754

I have modded mine and bulked it up a bit, but largely speaking it's a great starting point for a mancave. The only
difference I can spot is that the roof of mine was made from T&G and it looks like they are using OSB now for roof panels.
I swapped the glass in mine for Georgian wire opaque plate glass to keep prying eyes out and added some lighting
and a simple but structural bench.
This is a slightly smaller version of mine.

Gave it a coat of fence life last summer and it looks brand new again.

I'm ordering a new shed this week too Thumbs Up

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-x-10-19mm-Tanalised-Pressure-Treated-T-G-Apex-workshop-Shed-/141949058222?hash=item210cd2bcae:g:SIcAAOSw37tV-cGl

They do customisation to your requirements too, so I'll be getting an extra foot height, double doors and windows for not much more than the original cost. Free installation also.

If you do get one, make sure it's tanalised and 19mm if possible. I've seen some really flimsy looking sheds for quite a lot of money.

That price seems quite steep for the size of it.

When you say scandi looking effort are you talking about a proper thick timber walled job rather than thin frame and shiplap?
The one my brother in law has is very sturdy and well built, nothing like a normal garden shed. Not cheap though.

I'd guess the ones I've seen local are 16mm T&G, roof is the same. I think they're reasonable quality, but not value for money when you look at ebay. Thing about ebay is the pictures are lovely. If it turns up and it's wank, it's hassle.

They usually come and put the shed up in the price. Organise with them 50% up front, 50% cash once installed and happy. Then they'll be more focussed on doing a good job to get the full amount. That's something I'd want. Thumbs Up

my 10 x 10 was 600 of the queens finest. Its only shiplap T&G, but then i lined all the insides with 8mm mdf sheets to reinforce it an make it a bit more stronger

metal = condensation an unless you get pricey ones they are made from tin

plastic - no experience, but we have got them plastic storage lockers around the garden for all the crap the mrs likes to collect an the lockers have basically fell to bits - UV damage?

Yeah, that sounds to me like a traditional garden shed build, not a posh solid wood garden cabin. My bother in laws one has 45mm thick walls, he got it second hand for about £1k, I think they go for about £2k new in your sizes.

The downsides IMO of plastic is that it's hard to customise it to how you want it. Also it doesn't exactly look great does it? Especially when it becomes UV damaged over the years.

Although it would be easy to assemble and wouldn't rot, but decent tanalised sheds should last 15+ years without rotting if they're raised off the floor.

Draw plan, work out quantities, buy wood, fixings and roofing materials (EPDM is easiest and best), build shed. Thumbs Up

Make it bigger than 10 x 8 if you can. I have a 4m x 3m shed I use as a workshop and I could do with bigger.

I have a Keter 8'X8' plastic shed. I get zero condensation in it as it has vents at the apex. Completely watertight and with a built in floor. Quick to put up, wont rot and 100% watertight.

Wood, by it's very nature soaks up water and rots. Plastic doesn't.

How long have you had it? Is it showing signs of UV damage on top - brittle, discoloured etc?
What are the door locks like?

Is it metal framed? Could you board out the inside?

The thing I like about this is that you know when you buy one of these, you'll get the same kit as other people. Wooden sheds can vary so wildly, I think I'd need to see it in the flesh before I put £800 on one!

I have a wooden one but after seeing the steel one my brother got I wish I had gone for steel. Also if you're just having it as a temporary store it will be easier to dismantle and flog on once your garage is built.

Hopefully this year I'll be building a new 26x14 workshop to replace my current one and I've been debating over concrete vs wood taking condensation as my main concern. I'm pretty much decided on a nice log lap affair but I have to contend with building regs issues as I want to build within 1m of my boundaries. Combustable structures of that size need regs inspection and fireproofing if built within 1m.
