I used to have a Scala Rider Bluetooth communication thingy that ceased to function. No requirement to speak to anyone, listen to music, answer phones etc..

All I want is Bluetooth small speakers in my helmet to allow me to hear the voice instructions from my sat nav. Don't want or need a microphone.

It seems a bit pointless buying something that does all the things I have no requirement for!

Is anyone aware of anything on the market or better still does anyone have any experience of a system?

I'm not saying it's perfect, or the best solution, but here's what I have. A Sony Ericsson MW600 Bluetooth receiver. It is tiny, connects to my iPhone and TomTom Urban Rider and relays instructions and music. It comes with some in-earphones but you can use whatever ones you want as it has a standard 3.5mm socket. You can use it for calls, but you don't have to, nor have I tried. It also has a FM radio built in, which I haven't used on the bike but did use at Fairford airshow to follow the broadcast commentary. It lasts for hours on a single charge (micro-USB plug). I have used it with in-earphones on the bike, which works fine, but am planning to try and find some flat helmet earphones so I can wear earplugs but still hear directions.

£166.29 at sportsbikeshop currently, went out of stock today with a little over a weeks wait.

I saw what looked like an appealing deal and was going to order, what makes it shit?

Radio doesn't work. Well it does, rarely - reception is shit unless you glue your hand to the side of your head or ride in circles round a radio station.

Tap-tap sensitivity is either hit your head with a mallet or wave a feather in your general direction.

Voice recognition works fine if there's no noise but the number of times I ended up just saying "Oh fuck you Sena" exceeds the number of successful confirmations by a factor of 10 when on the move.

One thing I do like is the external mic, double tap the button underneath and audio from outside your helmet is fed inside. Very good for petrol stations etc.

£166.29 is not a bad price, I got mine from SBS at £180 but that came down from £230 .. there's a reason the price is dropping like a brick. Also bear in mind Sena will want you to send it to them in the USA if you want warranty work done.

The phone app is rarely useful, you can't even update the Sena firmware from it. That has to be done from a PC/Mac and involves disabling every other bluetooth device in range.

Can't recommend anything, but might worth to mention to stay away from the Interphone F series as well.

I had an older one that had to be replaced with a newer version when the pins broke for some reason. Now, the original one wasn't too bad, but not great either. It was "ok" but the price was too hight for it just to be ok.

The replacements however were much worse. Though it was supposed to be much better, the sound quality became terrible, making it really difficult to fully understand the other person. Not to mention how difficult it was to set it up with more than 2 people.

Thank god the the rat/mouse/noideawho ate through it in the storage during the winter.

Can anyone recommend any bluetooth headphones that are just headphones, no mic etc?

Similar to what you can get for skiing but without the higher price tag.

I want them to be in the helmet rather than in-ear etc.

i.e.

Just did this to my lid the other week for commuting tunes.

I used one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B017R3ZOPS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

And a pair of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002GAXWF2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

I've tried in-ear before but it paggers my ears on a long ride so the cheapy over ear Philips were perfect, they're really quite thin and just slotted in between the padding no problem. Bit of velcro to hold them in place and the whole job stays mounted when I take the lid off.

The bluetooth receiver thing is great, mounted it inside in front of my chin it's tiny. And the cool thing is, I can pause/play/turn on & off.....with my chin! USB rechargeable and lasts a week.

Sound is pretty decent too, certainly not stellar but perfectly acceptable and doesn't even lose too much to wind noise at 70+. Not bad at all for under 20 quid.

The old autocom systems were fantastic, especially the microphones. They now do bluetooth systems too now. I would assume they are decent if a bit pricey.

How are you getting on with this unit? How is the sound quality?

I'm in the market for a Bluetooth headset but I'm undecided of which one to buy. I don't want to spend that kind of money on a Sena 20s which isn't waterproof.

My 2p. Have been bimbling about for 2 years with a set of these (actually bought two sets, so I can rotate usage and charging under seat).
Sound quality wise, they are nothing like an in-ear set. But they are hassle free and I think, probably one of the best buys I've made for biking.

BT'd up to my Android phone and CoPilot (which has it's limitations, such as calling out roundabout exits by number, not by road number), but has meant I can design complicated runs down twisty back roads and crack on. Been away plenty of times camping and would have spent all my holidays lost if it weren't for these.

Charged they will play music constantly and issue SatNav commands for about 6 hours.

Sound quality for SatNav + phone calls is perfectly fine. For music it's very tinny. But using ear plugs ( e.a.r fx) it cuts out the treble and you can hear the bass and it sounds ok.

Very happy with them. Will buy another set when these break / the battery dies.

Hi Pigeon,
Would these work with a flip front helmet?
Have started investigating Comms for pillion, and these look good.

Thanks

I think they would, but don't know about flip lids.

The BT unit sits on the side with a bracket that clamps to the side, which would be your non-flip bit.

The wires go under the internal foam padding, straight across the middle of your lid, left to right.

The mic extends from the bracket to go around the chin bar. Your chin bar moves, but that should be fine because the mic is not attached at any point except the bracket at the side.

You might find it gets in the way of putting the lid back down, but it's adjustable and seems to have a bit of rigidity. So it should stay in place regardless of how many times you lift / close the front half of your lid.

I had recesses built into my lid for the speakers so they are totally out the way. I guess this must be standard across 90% of lids these days surely?

2nd'ed. Me and my lad use these and they're pretty good for the money. Had some problems with fitting them in tight helmets, but once they in the right place and bedded down a bit they were ok. Thumbs Up

Ordered 2 sets during the week, and fitted// tested them today.
Great fit, and really good for pillion chat and fm radio.

Thanks for the recommendation.
