 |
|
Hey guys,
Got an odd question (I guess) my GF wants to buy a motorcycle and we found a nice one which most likely she will end up buying.
Since my insurance covers me to ride other bikes as well would I be able to ride it back after the she buys it?
Thanks ____________________ Bikes: Honda CBR600Fi, Kawasaki ER5 |

I wouldn't bother calling your insurer, they're likely to give you a random or incorrect answer, as in Pryor vs GMP.
Look at your certificate. Read your schedule to confirm. If it doesn't say that the bike needs to be covered under another policy, then it doesn't need to be.
Change of keeper will cancel the VED (for that keeper). My belief is (not verified) that your GF (pics needed) can immediately buy VED for it using the new keeper slip number without the bike needing to be insured. However, if she does so, it will show as being insured anyway, under the old owner's cover, so no problem.
tl;dr version - take a copy of your certificate of insurance, buy VED online / over the phone, ride home. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

It doesn't say you don't need insurance though. It just states you won't need to provide a paper copy as it can be checked on the data base.
It's all a bit unclear really. ____________________ There ain't no devil, there's just god when he's drunk.

Nope, my Google-fu is failing me, but I seem to recall DVLA saying that they'll be happy to take our money even if it's not on the MID because they'll catch us out under the continuous insurance requirements later anyway and get their blackmail demand in either way.
Look at it this way, if you've just bought a vehicle, you need both insurance and VED before you can legally drive it away. There's no grace period. But insurance can take days to show up on the MID, so what do?
And it's really not a problem in this case as it'll almost certainly be showing as insured at the point OP's GF (need pics) buys VED.
All that said, she might as well pay for the insurance as well as soon as it's bought, even if it's OP that rides it home. It's easy enough to do all this stuff online now at the point of purchase. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Realising that we're going well OT (hello BCF) that's interesting as it's no longer necessary to show insurance when personally registering a new vehicle, except in Northern Ireland.
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-registrations
It used to be, I had to do it in 2009, but the requirement was done away with some time ago, under the same reasoning that continuous insurance gonna getchya anyway.
There may still be a need, or it may just be dealers just covering their own backs because it's what they've always done and they're creatures of ritual.
I recall buying a car long about 2005 where the paper certificate was tardy arriving, and the dealer wasn't for letting me drive it away untaxed. I handed them a letter saying that they'd made me aware of the legal situation and that I accepted that was my responsibility, and asked them whether they wanted to take my money in exchange for the car or not. It turns out that they did. They even gave me some flowers for my lady wife. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

You know the usual stuff to check for? Saggy shocker (although there's some bush play even from new), and rusted exhaust, especially the link pipe and the bottom of the end cans if it's still on a stock system. Clutch basket will be rattly but should quieten down with the clutch in. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
