The bike shows it was first registered on 27th February 2014.

Yet, the HPI shows the bike was written off 25th December 2013.

A 3 month wonder...

How can this be?

Did the shipping container it arrive on sink, and the bike be pulled from the depths of the ocean?

What happened, BCF?!

Cost me £5 that. Though saved me £1195 it did.

Hardly going to be a shipping issue since the vehicle has to be here before it can be registered.

It wasn't one of those BMW's in the container that got washed off the ship was it? Laughing

Any idea of what it might be?

Before I bark at the seller, I feel like he may not know either.

Could it have been damaged in the showroom?

WTF? How could I have any idea?

Just buy something else.

Because you have more experience in bikes, and most likely life, than I do.

How can something be written off 3 months before it was even registered... is the ultimate question. Of which I am asking you, Pete, if you know the answer?

Because I, Cronik, do not.

Ever thought that someone might have made a mistake putting the details on HPI?

But then, what credibility would a HPI-check be if you can argue with the information it provides?

Surely HPI isn't input by some half-bodied monkey. Dilligence should be a must in that realm.

HPI reports what various databases have for the vehicle. The fact some monkey in an insurance company couldn't tap the correct key isn't a reflection on HPI.In some ways it would be miss-leading if they 'corrected' information.

How about contacting the HPI company and asking why they show a bike as written off 3 months before it was registered?

All manner of places can input the database. I bought a bike that was showing as having finance owing and it was by some lease hire company. No-one is going to lease hire a Hayabusa so I rang them and it was actually a car - they had put in the wrong reg number.

Or just ignore it merrily and buy on condition. Who cares? It's an £1195 bike - and it's your first bike - so if it hasn't already had some accidents it'll get some eventually.

Would this perchance be a non-age based VRM, or one that spells out something quirky, like SP13RGS?

I'm guessing that the registration mark was on a bike that was written off in 2013. In 2014 it was moved to a different bike.

I have to guess as it seems that you're more interested in playing the Gollum riddle game rather than actually buying yourself a Precious.

Are you using the autotrader trick (it's free)? https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=4247006#4247006

Only seems to show write-offs, and not stolen bikes so I'd do a proper check before buying, but it's a good start that might save you some money.

Also a fiver, does that include a finance check? Haven't done one for a while but I thought they were a few quid.

That is mighty handy indeed. Thank you.

I shall use this to nullify my innate suspicions!

I bought 3 for £15 (TotalCarCheck current gold deal). £9 individually.

Finance checks included (the full monty).

I caught my dad at a bad time (ZX-9R has just been stolen, subsequently recovered but with damaged frame, Cat C), so he is wanting to seek a new ride.

So I 'sold' him one.

Also my sister is amid her driving tests/first car phase, so I said she can throw me a 5-note if she passes and claims a car this month.

60 days til' expiry though and she's already failed 4 times. I may need to use it again...proactively.

Probably lucky with that one, as they're no longer issueing v5's for Cat B's. Kinda reinforces my opinion they just use whatever category they fancy.

£5 with a finance check isn't bad, the cheaper £3 ones come without.
