My triumph starter shat itself...

Apparently it is a common issue.

The starter gear is pretty mashed but the idler gear is missing 3 teeth.
There is some nice metal shaving as well.

What do we think the solution is... new gear and new starter... or get the upgrade kit at this eye watering price...

I think Triumphant are taking the piss there.

There is a kit available from Triumph for about £460. Send me your engine number and I'll check tomorrow for you and tell you exactly what's in the kit.

The original lasted 50k+ miles. A standard replacement should last the same. You won't be keeping the bike long enough for a standard replacement to get worn out again.

New gear and starter will cost about 200 to 300.

I have a feeling the sprag may be dead too though, what symptoms would that show?

Before I took the gear out, my bike span the starter a few times before engaging and I imagine that is the sprag as on the idler gear there are no 2 teeth missing next to each other and I imagine the starter engages 2 teeth.

Managed to get on a microscope at work and if anyone cares here are 2 of the failed teeth

One seems to be a brittle fracture from overload and the second seems the same although it seems the tooth cracked and was still half attached and the next tooth on the motor pulled it off completely as can be seen form the smoother section which would be plastic deformation of the tooth bring pulled off by the motor.

Either way, they both seem to not be from wear...
