PostPosted: 17:05 - 27 Aug 2016    Post subject: Recommend me a trip! Reply with quote

Afternoon all,

I have recently aquired my first bike (A2) and I would appreciate some advice on an upcoming trip. I have taken a week off work in september and I would like to go on a 3-4 day solo jaunt out on the bike, which will be my first such trip.

For the sake of simplicity, I am thinking the UK is probably easier than europe, and due to my relative inexperience and naked style bike, I plan on reasonably short days of around 150 miles max, with as little boring motorway as possible. So my question to you all is firstly, where should I go, and secondly what things do I need to consider/bring with me/ prep in advance.

I am based near Birmingham, West Mids and budget is max. £350. I am pretty flexible with regard to camping or B&B.

Thanks for the help,
A.

I'm local. During training for A2 went to Brownhills, Redditch and some other place in no time, you'd be surprised at how many miles you can cover on a bike you enjoy before you even start to think about how far you've gone. Far more relaxing and easier to mile munch than on a tiddler. I'd recommend Brownhills as a stop, only really passed through a quiet village but looked nice.

TheMissendenFlyer on youtube does videos of loops recommended in the AA book by Simon Wier, I'm not sure if it has anything local though.

Do let me know if you find any particularly enjoyable routes as I'll save them for once I escape death trap tiddler.

Wales, or even the Lake District would get my vote

That was my thought as well. Either a loop of some sort in Wales,or maybe head up north via Buxton etc, couple of days in the lakes, then round the top of manchester before heading home via wrexham and bridgenorth way. What roads and plaes are worth a visit in Wales and/ or the Lake District?

This.

Don't bother with the brecon beacons, head straight for north/mid wales, some bloody fantastic roads are:

A483 from Builth wells to Newtown
A44 towards Aberystwyth
A487 to Dolgellau
A470 over Dinas mawddwy

I didn't go further north than Barmouth but I would imagine the roads round Snowdon and lake bala are epic, as well as some great roads slightly east of snowdonia

A44 - never ending bends

A470 pass
https://c8.staticflickr.com/4/3699/18982116335_a63159798f_c.jpg

Oh and cost wise, if you can camp it'll be dirt cheap, I did a 5 day, 1200 mile trip through France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany recently for £200 + food.

As well as fast roads, it's worth doing some of the mountain roads for variation and scenery. I used to do a mix on days when I rode in Wales.

You have the Elan Valley and the mountain road to Aberystwyth, which goes through Cwmystwyth and Devil's Bridge; Llyn Clywedog road from Llanidloes, from there take the turning through Dylife for spectacular views; from Llandovery, take the A483 north, turn off at Beulah for Newbridge-on-Wye for a proper roller coaster.

The only road I'd bother with over the Brecons is the A4069 at the western end.

Snowdonia you can't go far wrong: Beddgelert to Capel Curig, A5 north from there past Tryfan; Llanberis Pass. But also: B4391 south from Bala, A4212 north from Bala, and either stick with that to Trawsfynydd, or B4391 to Ffestiniog (A470 at Trawsfynydd is straight and boring). A470 from Betws-y-Coed to Ffestiniog is good, especially at the Betws end....oh, the list goes on! Very Happy

The Lake District. Good faster roads: From Cockermouth, take the A5086 to Egremont, then A595 south to Broughton-in Furness; A591 south from Keswick to about Grasmere, gets very busy from here down to Ambleside, but the stretch along Thirlmere is a cracking bit of road, if you get it clear.

Scenic: Wasdale Head, off the A595 through Gosforth - bumpy little lane but see it through to Wast Water for scenic reward.
Langdale from Ambleside. Again, bumpy, twisty road, leads to views of the Langdale Pikes, carry on over the pass to Little Langdale, then turn right (west) for Wrynose and Hardknott passes. From western end of the Hardknott, turn left (south) and go over Birker Fell for views and high moorland road.

Loop: from Keswick, through Borrowdale, Honister Pass, Buttermere, Newlands Pass, and back to Keswick through Portinscale.

From Ambleside, up The Struggle to the Kirkstone Pass, on down through Patterdale and Glenridding, carry on along Ullswater shore, stop for coffee in Pooley Bridge.

And so on Very Happy

Thanks very much gents,

plenty of useful stuff for me to get my teeth into here. The other advantage of Wales is that some of these routes are close enough to home to be day trip friendly. I will be sure to check them out!

They are definitely. But do bear in mind you're at your freshest earlier on in the ride, so if you've 90 miles to cover and 2 hours riding to do, before you even get to the road you want to attack, plan for a good stop for lunch or whatever as well.

It's nice to get a few days stint as well; you settle into it after day 2.

From Birmingham I'd go to Telford, join the A5 and ride it up to Betws y Coed, have a Cadwaladr's ice cream, leave the A5 and explore the awesome roads around Snowdonia. Go down the Llanberis Pass to Llanberis itself and go to Pete's Eat's for good old fashioned down to earth Cafe nosh with a real mug of tea. Then go and explore more epic roads. Plenty of photo opportunities on the way. Then when you've had your fill, head back down the A5 to Brummie land.

Something like that anyway Very Happy

Wales is fantastic, plenty to offer. Great people, cheap accommodation and jaw dropping scenery. The roads? Oh my...

+1 for Wales in your shoes, for same reasons everyone else has said really.

If you're thinking of the North West/Snowdonia area I would recommend this place for camping, or accomodation if you don't mind a communal bunkbarn.

Very good value, cafe right outside and biker friendly.

The snag (in my opinion) with a few nights out is if you've booked some accomadation before you'll be tied to your route regardless of weather. If you do day trips you can look at the weather forecast each morning and avoid rain if possible. Also, if there's rain and shitty weather everywhere you aren't feeling obliged to go...

As a ps I've recently had a few decent trips round the Lincolnshire Wolds area. Well worth a visit in my opinion.
