Hypothetically speaking, if I were to replace a thermocoupler in my boiler, what are the chances of me making a crater where my house once stood?

That's a DIY job.

I would point out that you need to turn the gas off but if you didn't already know that then it's not a DIY job. Laughing

It might invalidate your house insurance, mine stipulates all gas repairs/installations must be done by a gas safe registered person.

That said, they are a piece of piss to work on.

To paraphrase Arthur Ransome.

"Better exploded than duffer. If not duffer, wont explode.".

Compared to motorcycles. Boilers are simple. Otherwise boiler repair men wouldn't be able to do it.

The nice gas man replaced the thermocouple, simple job. I have a new problem now, the pilot light ignites and stays on but when the main burners come on after about 15 seconds or so there's a loud click and everything goes out, what do?

It's a crappy old boiler that I've been meaning to replace for years, I might just get it done.

If it's a normal boiler rather than a combi, I wouldn't.

If it's a normal boiler, keep it. Combis are unreliable pieces of shit that fuck up on a regular basis and are nothing but trouble.

Is it getting water? Pump kicking in when it starts? Could there be an airlock?

Sounds like it's firing up the burner then deciding it's too hot and cutting out again.

My combi did something similar and after an enormous amount of pissing about, three visits from the boiler guy and two new PCBs, I got mad, grabbed a wiring diagram and worked out the problem myself using my brain and a multimeter. It was a flow switch that was put in on the piss (despite there being both a locating notch AND an arrow on it). It would fire up, decide no water was flowing in and cut out again.

You're not allowed to work on anything behind the front cover
You need to be Current Gas Safe Registered.
It only costs a couple of grand to get registered though.

Seriously.... Turn the gas off and do it. The real difficult not is checking for leaks after. Even the Pros get leaks.
You could soap test with a plant/empty kitchen cleaner sprayer. Or buy a tin of soap sprayer from B&A et al.

When you say everything goes out do you mean you have to re light the pilot afterwards as well or just that the main burner goes off?

Yeah, the pilot light goes out as well, along with the main burners.

Hit it with a big a hammer as you can find.
A few times for best results.
If it don't work after that, it's almost certainly fucked.

If the pilot is staying lit ok until the main burner fires up its probably that causing the pilot to blow off of the thermocouple, which in turn thinks the pilot has gone out and cuts the gas.
Could be that the pilot is too small, maybe slightly blocked in the injector or tube. Could possibly be an issue with the gas valve set up(main burner set too high/pilot too small/thermocouple not positioned correctly).

Probably not that helpful but it's unlikely terminal, just needs a bit of fiddle by somebody that knows what they're doing.
