50cc bikes are all a pain in the anus, especially geared ones, you're always in the wrong gear.
Just by a twist and go for the year and look forwards to a geared 125, which you'll always be in the wrong gear on too.

Mr Insurance Man is going to be rubbing his grubby mitts together whatever you choose. You're going to get fleeced, or really fleeced.
I'd go with something like a Kymco Agility to build a no claims bonus and then switch to a 125 geared.

Something totally different and a classic. About to advertise this as my daughter didn't use it.

Counter to the above; a manual 50cc will teach you clutch control, develop a tap dancers left ankle and also make you a clutchless upshift king. Also there's something cool about a ringding fiddy...

Cagiva, Aprillia, Gilera, Derbi, Rieju 50cc anthing...

Kawasaki AR50? Yes please!

A scootay moped is fine, nowt wrong with it as a first bike. But the argument that it will be easier to live with isn't much of an argument. 50cc bikes are limited in what they can do, so you may as well have one you like!

I had a Piaggio Zip 50 (tuned to the gills) when i was a tiddler, and I loved it. My mate had a Gilera 50cc moto cross style bike. It went faster, cornered in a much more stable fashion and was just a nicer thing to be on. Yeah you have to change gear a lot, but so what? You have to change gear a lot on anything with negligible torque.

Ring, ring, ringdingdingdingdingding nnnnneeeeeeeoooooooowwwwwwmmmmmmm!

The best tip on owning a 50cc is never spend a penny on 'tuning' it.
You will do next to nothing and not increase its value by a penny.

I agree throwing money at a 50cc bike to make race bike is a fruitless exercise but... tearing it down, derestricting it and playing with exhaust/carbs etc to get as many mph's as possible will teach you basic mechanics and if you're a masochist, you'll enjoy it too.

I'm assuming all your choices are stink smoke? Can't imagine a 4T 50cc being a good place to start...

I never learnt true clutch control until I got a big bike, even on a 125 you can control the power just on the throttle. So you basically learn how not to stall and change gear. Think I stalled my 125 twice in the year I had it, and a sequential box isn't exactly rocket science is it Smile

I didn't do the moped thing so can't really advise, but from what I'm told a derestricted 2-stroke might get you to 45mph. That's a lot better than 31 or 28 or whatever the limit's now. Try to find an unmolested Speedfight 2 Razz

Both my girls started on these, super reliable, old school cool, and both sold at a profit. Around 250 to insure and 30 plus mph as opposed to the newer 28mph limit. Just look after it and don't try to tune it

As others said forget gears.
Forget something that looks like a supersports, it'll still only do 28mph.
Go for a non-chinese twist & go, about £500. Put the rest towards the 125 you'll be buying next year.
Don't waste money trying (and failing) to make it go faster.

I had a geared 50 and Ioved it, and for that matter so did all my mates. It was restricted to 30mph but was a hell of a laugh, particularly being naughty in the local woods.

Mine was a TS50x - picked it up for a steal, something like £250 at the tail end of 2006.
