I was going to fit some crash bars to my 96 Bandit 600, but a mate suggested fitting some bungs/bobbins to the frame in front of the engine, can anyone recommend a set that won't break the bank? My mate reckons I'll get a set off Baye for £25-30, the ones I've seen are nearer £70+.

Screw threaded rod into the appropriate holes, drill-and-screw blocks of wood onto the rod, spray pound-shop black if you're fancy.

May know someone that did this on their GPZ500S. Super legit.

Unless you're really worried about ground clearance or are particularly fussy on cosmetics, I'd go for the crash bars, they offer far better protection, and I would think are far less likely to cause damage in an off.

do not fit bobbins to the front engine mount on a bandit (or hornet)

they have a habit of breaking the engine mounts in a crash, and the insurance company will write your bike off

Not the same bike but a car decided to play ping pong with me and my MT-09 last week, the front crash protector got bent back and saved the bike (and me) from any other damage

It was just a cheap no name £40 set on ebay. Needless to say I've ordered a replacement set!

I'm sure if you put your bike model and crash protectors on ebay search, a similar cheap set will show!

My bungs made a huge hole on my engine....

What, he fitted them, then a big hole just appeared? Cum hoc, ergo propter hoc.

Crashing made a huge hole in the engine. The bungs just failed to save it. People get Schumachered while wearing helmets, but it doesn't mean that they never help.

OP's riding a 20 year old Bandit. I'd hazard a guess that any crash with enough energy to wreck the bike despite the bungs is going to make it non economic to repair anyway.

Hornet is true. The cheapo box section spine frames bend on impact even low speed spills and low sides. The Norf BCF lot killed 6+ Hornets from low speed spills due to the frame snapping as they seem to be made from wet cardboard.
