Thought I'd check the voltage of my battery last night. Really surprised to see the state of it.

Seems like it's a film that covers the battery case that has sort of lifted/melted/been heated. Also it seems to smell of petrol!

It's about 3 months old, the voltage was OK. First Motobatt I've bought and wish I'd stuck to the normal lead/acid type.

Trying to find the receipt to contact the seller.

Anyone else seen this?

Thanks.

If it smells like petrol then are you sure there's no way some could have leaked into the battery compartment as that would melt plastic eventually.

That's odd - I've had 2 Motobatt batteries in 2 different bikes and never had issue like that. Possible that it's not an official battery and a copy? Where was it bought from?

That's quite worrying. I would have said overcharging but if your battery voltage is OK it sort of rules that out.

So your battery is melted, and smells like petrol. And your first thought is that the battery is faulty?

There's nothing in your battery that would melt the casing. The only thing that's in it is battery acid and amazingly, they make battery casings out of stuff that doesn't dissolve in battery acid.

If it was heat, it would be droopy. If it was overcharging it would have started gassing and bulged the casing.

So it's almost certainly been melted by some sort of solvent.

Yes, petrol would seem to fit the bill. So find out how petrol is getting in your battery box and stop it. If for no other reason than it will eventually set your arse on fire.

Petrol melts many plastics, including motorcycle fairings.

Is it a genuine battery? It does look kind of odd. Could you make more pictures? Thinking

Yes, I gave the whole area a good wash down.

Yes, my first thought when I smelt petrol, but couldn't see where it could have come from.

unlikely to be battery, its only been attacked from one side. Something else is causing this, esp you mention the petrol smell and it probably gets hot in there too!

Must be happening continuously though. Wouldn't get that from one splash of petrol considering how quickly it evaporates.

I've not seen a Motobatt battery like that, with the wires protruding. Interesting.

I thought this, but assumed it was the new way and I was just behind the times.

I'm sure it's just another type that I've not seen before, mine I bought last year for my FZ1 had the standard small bracket / bolt connector bits in the top corners.

It's definitely not a way they're going as their big selling point is that they offer the only 4 terminal batteries.

After a quick look on their site it seems to be a battery for some early/mid 80's 50 and 125cc setups.

What bike is it?

Time to start looking at where the fuel is coming from?

I've put Motobatts on the CB500, Savage and the Electra, and will probably put one on the 350. Never had an issue like this with them.

Looking at the photos again I'm still wondering if it has come out of the battery rather than melted the case. To me it looks like extra material on top of the battery case rather than the case itself.

Something has dripped that has "just" been catching the top edge of the battery on the cable side,
it then looks to have run along the seem until it reached the cables where it then ran down the battery.

Thumbs Up
Has someone been using epoxy resin or some other kind of glue to make a repair in the vicinity of the battery?

Hi

I assumed looking at the pics it was a 6V battery (which often are wired like that), but on checking it isn't. Seems to be only a 2.5ah battery, so presume it is for a bike that uses very little battery power.

All the best

Katy
