Permanently bike-mounted videocams?

I'd like to get myself a mini video camera specifically for the purpose of collecting evidence in a car versus bike situation. I really don't want a helmet cam as I really don't need yet more 'stuff' to prepare every time I go out for a ride - have got enough of that already. Also, I don't want to look like a Tellytubby.

Almost all the bike cameras I can find seem to be aimed at riders wanting to record their adventures for posterity in HD, whereas for car drivers there are plenty of (eg) cheapo rear-view mirror mounted cameras which just loop for 2 or 3 minutes, and capture everything leading up to an 'event' on a memory stick. I can't find anything like that for a bike, other than some really expensive kit intended for racetracks.

What I'm after would need to be small, cheap and reasonably surreptitious, so as not to attract the attention of scrotes when I'm parked up.

Does anything like this exist, or am I asking for the moon here?

was gona ask the same question as you after a SMIDSY this morning but I would think a helmet one would make more sense as you will look to where the accident is going to happen like a t-bone, whereas a bike mounted one might not capture the event properly?

In my experience anything that falls into the category of "cheapo" (including the car ones) don't have enough resolution to capture car number plates properly except on perfectly clear days at less than 50mph.

If a car side swipes you are 60 and disappears, you can forget about getting any incriminating video of them - other than "It was a white car".

Remember the car ones don't need to be waterproof / weatherproof either.

I tried all sorts and ended up just biting the bullet and buying a Sena 10c.

- Its perfect quality (if a bit pricey)
- Records in loops the same as a car one
- Doubles as B/T headset for inter-bike chatting
- Small and light enough to not notice it on the side of the helmet

I'm sure with a bit of research you would be able to find something that would be waterproof and small enough to hide on the front / back of the bike... But Id hazard a guess that the footage quality would be poor.

I've had an Innovv C3 mounted to my bike just below a mirror for about a year and a half. The camera is small and waterproof and the recorder sits under the seat and loop records onto a memory stick in 1080p. The video quality was pretty good but I think the lens has taken a battering and there's a lot of little square pinprick marks on the playback now that I think are salt / stone chips or something. Also, when I had a low speed off it corrupted the looped segment that was recording at the time, so was useless.

The company does a forward and back looking setup now. If you mount a camera I think you should put it higher up than I did and maybe behind a screen.

mount it on your helmet and if something does happen, guarantee you'll be thankful you bothered with the extra 30 seconds it takes to click it in and hit record

I have been thinking about this as well. I found a page where a guy permanently mounts front and rear cameras so he doesn't have to touch them unless he has an incident.

Also, say you had a front mounted camera and you got T-boned - surely the footage of a clear road in front would be enough to prove fault?

Where are you thinking of putting it, that is one of your main downfalls right there. This is my bike after the bike car situation. I doubt if it was on the bike at the front it wouldn't have survived in one piece.

On the helmet would be wiser.

something like this will record ,if you can find room under the seat or something, it will run off 12v.

and then use a numberplate/reverse camera, it will be IP rated for external use,
then add a decent memory card to the DVR.
