My rear tyre needs replacing, and I have two options. Wait about a week and a half for my usual Continental ContiGo! tyres, or get it done this week (and £20 cheaper) with Avon Streetrunner tyres.

I don't care about the extra £20 either way, what I want is a nice ride where I feel comfortable, not worrying about the tyre. I've never ridden on an Avon tyre, but I have heard bad things about them (poor quality, wear too easily, slippy in wet). I can't find any reviews, except the Avon PR bumf.

Anyone used these, or have a recommendation?

The Conti's get nicknamed the 'Let-Go' based on their wet weather performance

I have them on my YBR and it was recommended by a few people to switch to Michelin Pilots, which may not be an option for you?

A continentel or an avon? Had you considered making your own out of play-dough?

What size tyres are you looking for?

I'm after 100/90-17 for my Honda CBF125.

The conti's have been brilliant compared to whatever were fitted to the AJS JS125, but there is a bit of hesitancy in the wet, I'll agree.

My first bike was a brand new CBF125 with Conti Go's on. Honestly, I nearly gave up all-weather riding because of those. I have since learnt it was the tyres and not just the skinny bike wheels (which obviously didn't help). White lines, manhole covers and other stuff magnifies by a factor of 10 how awful they were.

I've got an MSX 125 with 12 inch wheels and Michelin City Grip Winters. I throw that thing all over the place wet or dry, I get a twitch every now and again (usually on an off camber wet roundabout), but not full on slides/drifts like I had on the CBF.

I think I'd try this personally... Pirelli Angel CiTy 100 90 17.

Generally expect a Pirelli to be better than a Continental or Avon, but not tried these specific tyres.

I've sent an email to my local tyre place to get a quote. Time is of the essence though, I leave for work at about 6am, and I'm pumping it up at 5.45am.

Last night when I got out of work I had to pump it up as well. It was on the cards to replace, as it was an advisory, but I still have (some) tread and I can't see anywhere obvious that would be a puncture (or even a slow puncture).

I have recently put Streetrunners on the little YBR. About 500 miles into them now.

They seem decent enough, although it's not really quick enough to get into trouble with them. No slips or slides I wouldn't expect on any other tyre, no vagueness that I find with a "touring" tyre, I know what they're doing. I'd happily put another pair on her if I wore them out.

I think I'd look at seeing if there is a suitable modern Pirelli fitment available for it? The old discontinued MT65 tyre was fairly awesome on a small light bike both for wet and dry grip.

I've heard good things about Michelin pilot tyres, but expect there's loads of different types for different bikes all under the pilot name.

The Pirelli Citydemons, which is the usual suspect in these sizes, are fucking awful. It's like having an ultrahard touring tyre on. Avoid.

Continental classic attacks are pretty damn good small radial tyres too. Trouble is they only do 18/19'' 100/90 and 110/80 sizes, so no good for OP.

I've heard that Sava make some small sporty tyres for lightweights though?

just to reiterate what has already been mentioned. The Conti-Go's are the worst tyre I've ever used.

Had some sort of chinese brand budget tyre that was a few years old on my divvy which were better.

Wrong size for anything good. Id suggest michellin in whatever is closest to their pilot roads.

Many other 125's use 110/140's which allow far better choice.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance.

I ended up going with Pirelli Angel City's.
It was mainly down to a) having heard terrible things about the Avon brand, b) after several thousand miles, still not having a lot of confidence in the Conti's and c) a hole having appeared in my tyre by friday evening / saturday morning (trying to pump it up so I can ride to the tyre place, and just hear hissing coming back from the tyre!)

I'm around 40 miles in, and because of the different profile the bike is taller. Even before they are properly scrubbed in, the new tyres do feel better. I will keep you updated.

New tyres pretty much always 'feel' better because they've got a nice round profile.

Scrubbing in is pretty much a myth for most tyres.
At worst you need to progressively lean a little more at a time. Doing a certain number of miles doesn't really make sense.

tell that to this guy. always makes me lolz.

I've always treated new tyres like cold tyres. Don't go mad from the off. Doing 100miles in a straight line isn't going to help if you chuck it into the your first corner hard.
