Left my bike parked outside over night with a motorcycle cover (oxford stormex), I also used the buckle under the bike so the cover is secured on the bike, and there are somewhat big winds in my area, was wondering if anyone had ever had their bike blown over on its side using a cover?

Sit the bike at such an angle that it's facing the wind head on, like you were riding into it.

Yes twice; once on my 125 the cover lifted it over the second time on an ER5 bad footing side stand sunk a tiny bit and toppled over.

Yes, a GPZ900, but on the same night, the roof decided it was bored with being a roof and it wanted a to change careers and be an aerofoil, and promptly buggered off. I was more worried about the roof if I'm honest. Not so much "somewhat big winds", but more a full blown storm in the highlands. Insurance paid out, I chucked a "new" tank and bars on it, tidied away the wiring, sprayed it matt black, and rode it for another 6 months.

If the wind is that bad you're better off removing the cover, it just acts as a wind sail. If it doesn't blow off into the night along with peoples sheds and trampolines then it'll either destroy itself or go over with the bike Idea

I was a bit worried about this happening last night, when the winds picked up. Hubby and I share the same Y-anchor, so the bikes are close together. I made him swap positions with me, so that his tank of a V-strom didn’t squash my YBR if it went over. Took the added precaution of using a dog lead to attach the wheelie bins to the fence too, as I was worried about them cannoning into the bikes.

New bikers, new bikes and first winter is a stressful time. Mr. Green

My bikes have never blown over with a cover on, but then again one was 210kg. So far my lighter SV hasn't blown over either. You get lucky I guess.

The CB250 has been blown over 3 or 4 times, once it was even blown forward off its centre stand.

If the wind is strong (or forecast to be strong) then I don't bother with the cover. Finding it wet in the morning is better than finding it on its side.

Oh yeah.

My CB250RS, 30+ years ago, and I was actually sitting on the bloody thing at the time!

I'd ridden into Uni on a really windy morning, and on the campus I had to pass as usual down a roadway between two buildings which due to some design flaw always caught the wind like crazy, and amplified it. As I entered the gap I thought, nah, better not, and came to a stop in order to turn round. Just at that moment there was an almighty gust, and despite both feet flat on the floor I just couldn't hold it up, and in glorious slow motion 'SH-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-T', over I went, much to the mirth of all the other students heading into lectures on foot.

Yep, happened early Sunday morning. My ER-6 went sideways, probably due to the Oxford Stormex cover on it acting like a sale. No major damage, just scrape on the fairing and scratches to the bar-end mirror.

Shit, my new bike would have just gone over if it wasn't for the chain through the swingarm/ground anchor holding it up. Thumbs Up

I only installed that ground anchor 10 days ago, that's a bit of luck!

Yeah, and it sucks. Thumbs Down

I used to have to park my ZX9 on a narrow path to the front door, meaning I couldn't aim the bike into the wind. That, coupled with forgetting to remove the cover (doh) meant it blew over the sidestand side and scraped the engine cover. Luckily the rest of the bike landed on soft, wet ground. I took one look out the window and decided to leave it there until morning; figured it wasn't going anywhere else. Razz

Other than removing the cover, you can also put a tent-peg in the ground and attach the bike to that using a bungee looped through the frame and pulled F-tight. I use that method when camping in open sites.

I must be lucky, winds were battering my bike here last night and it didn't go over even with a cover on. I suppose one day my luck will run out though.

A friend of mine had his 600RR blown over twice. Made all the more worse because he parks on the pavement parallel to the road so it fell further than it would if parked on the road. He's now learned to accept and live with the cracked rear cowl and scratched front fairing.

My XV535 was determined to go over in a gentle breeze. Unsurprisingly one of the changes in the next model year was a revised sidestand.
