I've variously used Gunk, SDOC 100, WD40 & white spirit.

They all work a bit but none are what I'd call brilliant.

What does everyone else use?

SDoc 100 is very effective but expensive - you do have to follow the instructions, leave it to work and use a sponge to loosen stuff. It's excellent stuff for deep cleaning really dirty bikes. For fling though, I just use a drop of brake cleaner (which i tend to buy in 5l cans) or isopropanol on a rag. Thumbs Up

Not petrol.

I use paraffin on a rag.
Soap n water.

Done.

WD40 is also good for removing oil n tar but paraffin does it cheaper.

I've used that method for years, any reason why I shouldn't, genuinely curious as I've done that for years with no side effects to tyres.

You could put that petrol in the tank and ride it? (Haven't a clue)

I use a bit of paraffin on a rag then wipe over the wheel with soapy water afterwards.

Stinky and does damage tyres if left unwashed or it gets time to sink in.
I smoke so Paraffin reduces the risk and it's kinder to the skin than the solvents in petrol.

Guess it mainly comes down to smell...I'd prefer £WD40. Petrol n diesel stink horrid.

It also 'works' on almost everything on the bike.

Like lots of things, WD40 shifts it but can seem a bit wasteful as a big can is around £5+ these days, and there's never enough propellant in it to use up all the liquid.
My current thing is to use a little soda crystals solution on a rag, which is none too clean (just rinsed under a tap). Rub down the wheel and the grease and wax lifts off and turns brown, then high-pressure water hose to wash it off. Saves on having to keep an endless supply of clean rags.

Paraffin + rag, simples.
Don't care about it until it's worth doing - spring or summer time.

I mostly don't bother. Stops it rusting.

If it's getting really caked on with grit in so it's starting to rub, paraffin or a couple of applications of muk-off then a hose.

Or a blast with a pressure washer. One of our local ones has mad hot water with an appreciable soap content.

Petrol on a rag... I also clean my chains in petrol...

But if you want to work a little area... acetone works too.

The Kawasaki's green wheels used to get scrubbed with hot soapy water followed by paraffin. Sometimes I'd use specialist wheel cleaners which were, in hindsight, too acidic or caustic. They eventually took the paint off. I had them repainted last year. I don't worry so much about absolute cleanliness on the R1's black wheels.

These days I use 90w gear oil which does a fine job on the chain but makes far less mess. It does need to be applied more often than aerosol chain oil or wax but I find that acceptable.

Don't get acetone on your plastics though, as it will dissolve some types.
Paraffin = cheap.
