9x7 for full tends to be the 'legal' size.
I use a 7x5 with standard lettering. You asked what was the smallest plate you could get? You could get a 2x1 but I think the police might have something to say about that.

Nine by seven for a standard four and three character plate, if your plate has three and three eight by seven is legal.

When I looked into this it was a complicated formula of letter spacing etc., and as a 7x5 would have been illegal I didn't bother.

I believe it's a fine and no points so if you're rich run whatever you want.

Unless you get stopped a few times and then the police can, in theory at least, cause you a whole load of issues I think.

Oi!
If it was good enough for the winner of the 1996 Golden Cleric award it should be good enough for you. Tut Tut

These are two separate questions. Legally, 9x7 for a standard 4-3 character plate. Practically, it entirely depends on your luck.

Then run a standard 9x7 and don't give them any reason to tug you.

The number of traffic coppers is falling, the amount of traffic is rising: you've unlikely to encounter one let alone get tugged, unless you make a habit of riding like a rascal, or are unlucky enough to be out on a weekend when they're running Operation Buzzkill.

I expect that what you want to read is that 7x5 is totes fine and won't be an issue. Is that the case?

Unless they're having one of their "Need money for the summer piss up" fundraisers that they set up on common biker routes once it starts to warm up then it's almost certain no copper is going to pull you and fine you just for running a 7x5 plate.

If you also have a problem with generally riding like a nob, have a straight through megaphone can and other little things they can tot up then it'll almost certainly get added to your list when they pull you.

That said it's still a roll of the dice.

I have run 7x5 for 6 years and 9x3 for 1 year. Never been pulled or even mentioned for the plate and I've been pulled a handful of times.

I've got a 7x5 on the gsxr and an 8x6 on the triumph (thought I had a 8x6 on the gsxr and was meant to order the same size, turns out I got it wrong).

never had any issues.

I put the standard back on for mots and they resemble sails in comparison.

never had any issues from police but I never see them in suffolk anyway Laughing

Y'know, I've never really understood the fetish for dinky reg plates. I mean, given that we all need to have one to ride on the road, regardless of what type of machine we ride; does it really make any difference if if it's a gnat's larger than the legally prescribed minimum? And when the potential consequences of doing so are to attract the unwelcome attention of Plod?

I have to say when I'm out bimbling around the country roads on a summer's afternoon with a big cheesy grin on my face, probably the very the last thing I'm thinking is "Oh FUCK! My number plate's TOO BIG!"

It's a similar thing with cagers; only they don't usually go for smaller plates; they prefer to spend their cash on having one made up in Comic Sans font, perhaps in the hope of attracting PC Dribble that way.

And for Christ's sake don't get me started on personalised number plates...

It's a completely fair point, and logically you're right, no point at all to them, or none that I can think of.

I'm sure 99% of people who use small plates (including myself, guilty of a 7x5) just prefer the aesthetics, 9x7s are huge and I couldn't believe how tidier my rear end looked after I changed over, it's also one of those offences which will get you fined maybe once in a century, some have been riding for years with small plates with 0 attention from the law, if it's something I have to pay £60 for every few years then so be it...

Though some do use it to block out ANPR or to make it harder for popo seconds before they do 150... (I'm not one of those people FYI)

Personalised plates I'm not sure about either, they usually have no meaning either, though it's funny when you see 2 bikes blow past, 1 with a 'CH4S3 M3' plate and one with '1100s GONE' plate (R1 and Hypermotard)

I put an 8x6 on the Duc, mainly 'cos the full-size one overhung the cans by half an inch either side, and just looked a bit weird. Sounds strange but the marginally smaller plate really cleaned the lines up.

Not caused any problems so far. Might be an idea to get the dealer info transcribed into the bottom of a new plate though. I deliberately didn't, and though it looks cleaner, it's a dead giveaway.

As an aside I got out the CBR while the Duc was in for service last week, and one of the first things i noticed was how massive and unsightly the (full-size) plate was.

Mines mounted right down under the seat as well, not sticking off the end near the brake lights as usual. Not even attracted any attention from it either.

Is there any rules about where it is mounted? Thinking mainly about those attached to the under tray as I presume they are 'hidden' from speed cameras?

Not to my knowledge and it has certainly never been an issue when plod are right behind me.

When the suspension is under load, the plate kind of drops a little out of sight when you're behind, you can't quiiiiiite read the bottom half of the plate Very Happy

I really want to do it aswell, but would like to know what the implications are, just like how I have a 7x5, but I know max I'll get is a fine.

Looks fantastic on though, nice mod Smile

"A registration plate must be fixed on the rear of the vehicle vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable, and in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of [this area]"

Says nothing about the height of the observer within that area.

Keep in mind it's an aluminium plate, as the first plastic normal one melted from the exhausts.

Very much appreciated, will be doing it soon enough, though doesn't section 2 basically go against it?

(2) A registration plate must be fixed on the rear of—

(a)the vehicle, or

But I guess the 'rear' isn't defined and the undertray is still the rear, am I right?

I've decided we should be friends, me and your bike that's Smile I would do the same but with underseat exhausts I can't see a solution that would work.
