Hi all,

I attempted to get some man points at the weekend by changing the oil and oil filter on the fz6. It all seemed to go pretty well and without much drama although getting the old oil filter off was a bit tough. I ended up just using a large plumbers wrench rather than the tool I bought for the job as even the smallest chain oil filter removal tool was too big.

I have been thinking for a while that it might be time for a new chain and sprocket. The ones on it were there when I bought the bike and I have done 15,000 miles since then. I know nothing about how sprockets should or should not look so thought I would get a picture and ask for some advice before I plumb up the cash.

I don`t like the tooth above nos 5, have you a pic face on so we can see if any are hooked.
Upon another look it looks like that sprocket has been turned over or the bike goes backwards. Shocked

Your call, you're the only riding the thing.

I'd run it until the sprocket become a bit more 'hooked', although I have had a chain snap on me before, but that's when I didn't inspect the sprocket and it was so bad it was actually missing a tooth Laughing

Tom-E - Stop giving shit advice.

OP - I'd replace that fairly soon, do the rear one and the chain while you're at it. As Bodyguard said above - the oil filter only needs to be tightened by hand, can't stand it when people have wrenched them on.

Needs replacing otherwise your new chain will be worn out in a few thousand miles.

When they get to this stage all the load comes on a couple of teeth / chain rollers. When it's new, it's shared across them all.

Each chain roller should sit snugly at the bottom of the hollow between the teeth. If it can move then the teeth are past it.

I would wait until the sprocket needs changing and then do both sprockets and the chain.
No point doing any of the 3 independently as they will wear the rest of the drive chain prematurely.

Give it a few months and re-assess...

I took one more slightly more face on.

With regard to the filter, I did it up just hand tight. The old one was about 2" deep in crap and was not budging. At one point I was going to try sticking a screwdriver through it to get more leverage but eventually it budged, even if it was a bit mangled by then.

I have watched a few youtube videos on changing chains and sprockets and while it doesn't look that hard I don't want to be half way through and find I can't undo a bolt or something. If my bike is off the road it adds 1.5hours to my day in commuting. I might just call up the garage (FWR) and have them do it. Its £40 to fit and £99 for parts looking at their website. I could get the same make parts on ebay for £90, I would then need to get the chain splitter and spend a couple of hours in the cold doing it. I'm not sure its worth while Smile

Thanks for the opinions I thought it did need doing, but its good to know its not in a "it's going to kill you" state Smile

That sprocket is well fucked. The tooth profile is wrong and there is a lot of metal gone. Buy a chain and sprockets and change them out now.

This is a good sprocket...

Chain splitter is also known as an angle grinder.

What chain and sprockets do you get for £99?

Any merit in changing the front sprocket only? Do they not wear much faster than the other components?

Unless the chain is beyond its serviceable limit then I see nothing wrong with that sprocket and yes, it's well worn that's obvious...

Of course it's not in perfect condition but the only consequence at this stage (unless OP is trying to set record lap times on a circuit) is that it will wear the chain faster however that is immaterial as it will be replaced with the sprocket when either comes to their limits Rolling Eyes .

Its recommended that all 3 (front, rear & chain) are replaced as a set. Only replacing one or two of the above will result in the worn component wearing the newer components out a lot faster...

Hi

If you are tight you could buy a pair of sprockets and keep the chain for a bit longer (given 75% of the cost of a replacement chain and sprockets is just the chain), but probably not worthwhile unless the chain is in very good condition. Yes doing this will mean the new sprockets would wear more quickly, but they are cheap comparatively.

Not that front sprockets are normally a far harder steel than rear sprockets. They turn about 3 times as fast and have the load over about 1/3 of the number of teeth, so the harder steel aims to even the wear out. Some aftermarket front sprockets are not treated like this though.

As to really wrecked:-

Says "DID"on the site and that was what I was looking at on fleebay.

For the sake of not having repeated visits and the fact it's recommended I think I'll do them all at once.

Cheers all.
