Hi all,

My new to me VFR800 (2002) has got a flat(Ish) battery. Got it a couple of weeks ago and suspect it was put on a booster to get it going, got it home and it went into the garage and I haven't ridden it since due to other commitments. Tried this morning and it's sluggish trying to turn over.

So, I managed to get the seat off

Found I think where the - terminal is

Cannot for the life of me work out where the + terminal is so i can attach the clips for the optimiser.

Can someone help a novice out please?

Thanks in advance

Both terminals will be on top of the battery at opposite edges surely Confused I don't think I've ever seen a setup where they hide one of the terminals somewhere else.

Is the + one covered with a rubber boot to remind you to disconnect that one last?

Find a picture online of the battery for your bike, then work it out from there?

I'm guessing that +ve is somewhere off the top of that pic, under the cover.

Sorted, the positive terminal is located under a plastic trim piece which needs to be removed from the side of the bike.

Thanks everyone for input

hi it looks like the two metal tags to the right of battery terminal is a link or solenoid the tag nearest the battery is from the battery + and the other one is to the starter if the optimiser is like most smart chargers it will have polarity and overload protection so its unlikely you could do any damage trying it

As you've already found, it's under the irritating trim piece that you'll fiddle about with for ages popping it back in......every...fucking....time.

What a STUPID FUCKING LOCATION !!!!!

I'm going to connect the optimiser leads to the battery this weekend and the cable tie the other connector somewhere.

Quick and dirty. Start the bike, turn on the headlight. If it gets brighter as you rev up from tickover, the charging system is broadly ok.

More scientific. Voltmeter across battery. Volts should rise with revs up to the region of 15v or so, no higher.

Even better. Ammeter. Watch current flowing into the battery.

Hondas of that era are known for iffy reg/rec units.

So, the bike has been on the optimiser a few days, went out last night and it started sweet as a nut. Reattached the optimiser closed garage door went to sleep.

Went out this morning sluggish but started, took it out for a good twenty mile blast, pulled onto drive at home turned engine off. Tried to start again, dead as dodo.

TL:DR place i bought it from are going to get a very arsey phone call on Tuesday, have also noticed the heatshield is loose so they can get that sorted as well

Whilst 3k on a bike isnt a lot of money to some people for a bike. It's a lot for me.

Rather pissed off at the moment.

Dunno. The superdream ones were about the best you could get when they first came out. All the magazines carried articles about how to retro-fit them to your suzuki (many of which at the time were using an unpotted bridge rectifier and mechanical regulator).
