So, after a year of tripping over my broken mig welder, I decided to see what was wrong with it...
It appears to be the lead that goes from the +ve output of the rectifier to the torch connector has failed.
My question is...
What is it made of?
If you look at the pictures it seems to consist of a grey powder in a rubber sleeve.
Is it some form of thermal fuse? (or has the cable seriously oxidized!)
Could I just replace it with some 25mm cable?

I would just replace it with some decent comparable CSA copper cable.

During copper shortages wires/cables were sometimes made of aluminium - perhaps this is a case in point. As advised good thick copper cable will be fine.

So...copper cable it is then.
(Me being the typical tight yorkshireman may just use a short length of meter tail which I have in my bit box.)

Thanks for the help, 'tis appreciated.

My first thought was aluminium, I used to deal with some shoddy aluminium cables in telecoms. If you so much as coughed near them after a few years in the duct it was enough to break them. Sad

A meter tail should do nicely providing its crimped properly
I've used old jump leads for similar.
Good ones, not the cheap skipping rope things you get from poundshops
