So riding home today I noticed a couple of odd noises. Since the last 2 bikes were rockers rather than shims, I'm not sure what is normal (and what is not).

There is a sort of high pitched noise/slight clack? over the top of the revs. Hoping its just the sound of the engine.

Sounds like a CB500 to me. I can't hear anything unusual in the video.

Usually extra metallic ticking noises can be traced back to:
- Leaking exhaust gaskets
- Valve clearances way too big.
- Clutch noise from unbalanced carbs
- Cam chain tensioner - but I'm just putting this in to please the CBR600 owners.

Valve clearances and carb balancing are part of routine maintenance, so I would do them - in that order - and then see how it sounds.

Thanks Robby.

-Exhaust gaskets are nice and tight.

-Valves clearances are being put off for a couple of weeks till I have a whole weekend to get it apart, check them and then put it back together again while waiting for new shims to arrive. I could be wrong, but don't valves usually close up with wear?

-Carb balancing is next on the list after valves.

You reckon? I've never had one of these engines before, but that was one of the things that I thought I could rule out? I'll have a look at the guide, tensioner and chain itself when I do the clearances.

Before you start taking things apart, reset the tensioner. This might fix your issues.

Cheers, that's good advice. The other bits can be done when I have the valve cover off, but cleaning and resetting can be done next weekend.

I'm not 100% sure, but I asume you've got there the generic Honda spring loaded self adjusting tensioner. There's a bolt on top of it, which is just a cover for the ''reset screw'' inside. You just turn the reset screw left and then let go = done, reseted.

This type (used pretty much on any Honda bike from the 90's onwards)

The silver bolt on the top of it is the cover for the reset screw inside.
