Hai,

I'm looking for a quiet helmet to help slow my hearing loss. I have a Schuberth C3 pro at the moment that my wife gave me, and it's incredibly uncomfortable, especially the choke chain chin strap. What other helmets can I go try on that are super quiet?

Cheers

p.s. I wear earplugs every day

My Shoei GT Air is pretty quiet, especially if you use the filter thingy (I forget what it is called) around the chin. The downside is that it isn't well ventilated. It's hot in the summer, unless I keep the visor open (negating the quietness) and the inside of the pinlock can mist-up a bit in the winter.

Schuberth seem to be the bench mark for noise but if you don't find them comfortable you are probably swapping one problem for another.

The quietest helmet I have is the Shark Evoline which is a lovely helmet, well made but there is something about it I don't really get on with and can't put my finger on. I keep reverting to my tried and trusted HJC FS11 which has an air pump system.

Do Schuberth offer different sized liners which may help with sizing?

I sooo wanted a C3 but the chin bar was too short and my chin kept hitting front, I settled on a Shoei Neotec with smaller cheek pads and couldn't be happier, pretty quiet too, decent ventilation and can always lift the front like your C3

Ear plugs?
Yes I know... not a helmet, but I find they cut out a ridiculous amount of noise so well worth considering if noise is a problem and you could also shop for something comfortable Smile

Unfortunately, it's just super round and my head is a bit more oval. The worst problem is actually the chin strap. It puts my throat in a vice grip because it's so far back.

The Shoei Qwest is a quiet helmet.

In that case, any standard sports/touring helmet should be
ok. This is my recent experience with the Scorpion 710:

The thing round the chin is a chin curtain, I have a Shoei GT air and use earplugs and find it is quieter than my previous helmet which was a Shoei XR1100

Yes, my previous was an XR1100, as well. Absolutely fabulous ventilation, but loud as hell.

I also have a Schuberth helmet, and yes they do various liners sizes.. As a matter of interest is the OP putting his helmet on the right way round...because they are one if the most comfortable helmets available.
Just a thought..

Buy better ear plugs or get some moulded ones.

Confused I'm confused that your helmet is too noisy despite wearing earplugs.
What kind of earplugs are you wearing?
I have a Schuberth S2, it's not as quiet as the Arai it replaced. With foam ear plugs in either is fine for me.

Shoei NXR, one of the quietest helmets I've used, believe it replaces the XR1100

I use a Schuberth C3 Pro and find it quiet enough not to need ear plugs for a couple of hours.
Longer days I have Ultimate custom plugs which work.

Chin strap not a problem for me.

When I had Shoei lids they were good but not so good as the C3.

I find the shoei neotec noisy, well ventilated but noisy. As with most flip up helmets I've used.
Have an x spirit 2 which is not as quiet as my arai quantum st (even with the pro shield up, I find it quieter than the neotec.)
I know what you mean about schuberth chin strap, sits quite far back.
The St is based on the rx7 helmet, but has a more oval shape to it. Meant to be better for road use over rx7 track focus.

Only if they fit, I've never got on with Schuberth lids.

same. my gt air is very quiet. When I first got it I could nearly get away without using earplugs it cut out the wind noise so well. Nearly, but not quite Wink

Had an older XR1000 before that.

edit:
I know you said you wear earplugs but what ones? You're trying to eliminate the wind roar and some may not cover that frequency range.

E.g. I tried my earphones once. Completely cut out all noise, was totally isolated from the world but they didn't stop the wind roar at all.. might as well have not had them in. Plus the whole cut off from sound thing was very bad too.

My current style of earplugs enable me to chat at the traffic lights/petrol station etc.. with my helmet on but yet they stop the crucial wind roar. If you're trying to reduce any hearing damage, you need to make sure that's what you're getting from your earplugs.

these are the type i use: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-EAR-UF-01-000-ULTRAFIT-EAR-PLUGS-CORDED-/151423154459?var=&hash=item234185f91b:m:mi_9pqlQr0q-9kO6YiHy20Q

foam ones were never good enough in my opinion

If you look at the noise attenuation of ear plugs, the expensive ones block about 25db and the cheap ones about 32db. The cheap ones are about 4 times more effective than the expensive ones. People who have paid lots of money for expensive mounded ones get angry when you point this out.

Serious lack of info here..... Rolling Eyes

While you can get quiet helmets. even the best are effected by many things....

So which bike, does it have a screen, what exhaust do you have.

Clearly if you are wearing ear plugs, then they are no good. If you are after a quieter helmet.

Yes sometimes this is true.

There is also considerable variation even if both have NRR of 32/33.

For instance the Howard Leight non tapered orange ones where you can see the foam bubbles reduce sound by only a little and I use them to play piano.

There are some smooth green tapered ones with fin ends which reduce sound a bit more.

While there are some smooth bell shaped orange ones that I find are the best I use these for riding.

I think the difference for me personally is how snug the fit is. The first ones mentioned are super loose and can be knocked out by putting on your helmet. The second ones you can feel them protrude in your ear while the last orange ones feel huge initially.

Don't know why they'd get angry; it's pretty irrelevant.

You don't need the highest db levels; in fact it can actually hinder you if you block out everything as you won't hear cars around you, horns etc..

It's not straight volume you're trying to block out as a biker. It's certain frequency ranges. I.e. the damaging wind roar.

You don't have to glue your ears shut just to protect your hearing whilst riding; you can have earplugs that still allow you to talk pretty normally to others but whilst riding they cut out that specific damaging frequency range.

As long as your earplugs are doing that then it's fine.

Contrary to the experience of others here, I've had my GT Air for a couple of years now and find it has more going against it than the Qwest it replaced, which I am rather disappointed with to be honest. I find I experience more wind noise than I did with the Qwest it replaced and the ventilation is relatively poor in comparison to the Qwest too. Riding out in medium to high 20 degree heat just makes the lid stuffy and rather unpleasant to be within.

If you're looking for quiet though, you won't do much better than Schuberth as others have mentioned.

Slight tangent...

Has anyone used the neck wind repellent things for flip front helmets (If they even do one)?

My helmet is amazing but for one thing... the only thing that creates noise is the slider switch for the inner shades.

Ive not got my helmet with me so i cant even remember what brand it is... I mentioned it here before in some thread.

But yeah quiet apart from the switch that causes all teh noise :p
