vtr had front cct failure..

got a new head bla bla

started it up it sounded fine.. then started to tick as the timing was out and bent valve on new head

head rebuilt put on

started up fine all good however it seems to be ticking...

i got head off, all valves good however 1 intake valve was sticking ever so slightly to 0.30mm gap before fully closed.

rode it for a week in the hope it frees itself up, still doing it so took the head off to find the valve is pretty much shut, my smallest feeler 0.002 wont even go in the gap it leaves but if you push it you get a little tap as it seats...

unless the valve sticking suddenly stopped and fixed itself as soon as id turned the ignition on and only left this little gap.. the sound hasnt changed so could it be something else?

bike ran fine, no real missfiring except from badly tuned carbs

Not sure where your at on this head, but if a valve has connected at some time you could well have a damaged valve guide. Sounds like it to me if the valve is sticking.

Wear in a small end bearing on con rod can also manifest itself in ticking. Big end tends to be a knock.

The gap in the valve will be because it's bent.

Bent = shorter end to end length. Hence gap now narrowed.

If you have prosthetic hand, it may well be a crocodile.

Or having failed to fatally run you over, your ex has put a bomb in it.

If the gap WAS big then the ticking was due to the 30 thou too much clearance on the follower. Either there was some debris under the lip of the valve from the last blow-up or the head has made contact and it was bent a little. I had a GS550 like it, you could just see the tiny bit of tilt in the valve head as it seated, the head was a little bent.

Carry on riding it if you feel confident. Hopefully it won't blow up, seize and spaz your remaining good leg.

im happy to change the valve if need be, im just curious wtf this ticking is...

the gap was big
it made a sound

the gap is now minute
it makes the same sound

could it still be the same valve? surely the tone would change,
i must get this valve out and check

Do you have a copy of the William Topaz McGonagall book of mechanics?
