always use earphones when riding but for once i wheeled the bike out without them after adjusting my chain as it had been somewhat neglected for a few weeks and it sounded aweful

spin the back wheel the chain has about 2" of play which is good then suddenly drops and rubs against the exhaust then tightens again...

best way to find the tight spot? will the tight spot be on or off a sprocket or ?

Tight spots are where you'll find them. i.e anywhere in the length of the chain.

To add.
The manual or a label on the swingarm tells you how and where to measure from. i.e on the ST2 the measurement is taken midway between the sprockets whilst the bike is on it's centerstand.

A metal ruler in a fixed position - rotate wheel a couple of inches - mentally note measurements etc.
Using the tightest bit of the chain use the adjusters so it's within tolerance.
If you find that the slack bits of the chain are touching anything it's usually new chain time (usually change sprockets too).

A quick way to see if your chain is on it's way out is to get the rear in the air and try and pull the chain from the rear of the rear sprocket. If you can see more than half a tooth between chain and sprocket it's worn at that particular spot - rotate and repeat.

[spelling corrected]

Put on paddock stand and rotate rear wheel. I find that when a tight spot gets bent to go round the sprocket, there is a moment when it comes off the sprocket where it has retained the bend, before it stretches out again.

Thats not a tight spot, thats a rusted up pin that's stopping the link from rotating freely.

High folks.

Tight spot/s on a chain, as the man said, is a chain ready for the bin.
I had a chain on a bike that would whung, whung, whung, at motorway speeds. I knew the chain was gubbed but I was too tight (Fiscally) to change it.
It was dire neglect that cause it and no amount of fettling with oil and teflon spray would fix it.
New Chain sorted it. Smile

What are you going to do when you find the tight spot? Do you think you will be able to cure it?
