I keep having to remove my rear spacer to scrub it, but it goes orange with rust about every 2 weeks outside, the spacer other side is fine.

I even tried coating it in acf50 and drying, then fitting, it helped only a little.
Is there a cure or do spacers just need replacing when they corrode?

Hi

You could get it replated. Although probably only makes sense as part of a batch of bits to get done

All the best

Heat it up and quench it in oil it should give it some protection.

What bike and year? Probably costs about £3 to replace.

You could be a flash git and get a titanium replacement.

Smear a bit of grease on it!
Do you grease the axle at all?
Every spacer I've ever had, had a good coating of caked on grease on it!

Aesthetics rarely bother me with bikes, but I assumed at minimum it would probably eat at the seals?
That being said, at the cost I may just purchase a spare set of dust seals.

I did think of painting it too, but I assumed that with the small amount of space between it and the seal, the paint would bind it?

What he said....
I've never noticed any of my spacers being rusty because on the odd occasions I take the wheel off everything gets a smear of grease

Once rusty again, treat with Kurust (or any chromic acid based rust treatment). It works by turning the iron oxide into a hard, impervious [black] layer which prevents further corrosion. You can buy it in Halfords, I've had a tub in my garage for at least 15 years and it still works fine.

I do grease the spindle, but I didn't think of greasing the outside of the spacer, with it being so close to the disc.

Just general purpose grease or copper?

I rarely use copper grease (cause I don't have any)..... if you're worried about spreading grease everywhere.... use a cotton bud or similar

I use zinc spray whenever I'm doing something in mild steel that I won't get a chance to paint.

Take spacer off, clean it, put a blob of grease on it, (any grease will do), work the grease around with your hand, wipe off excess, replace.
The thin layer you apply will not fling off.

Can't believe some of the replies in this thread, spray it with this, coat it with that, buy a new one, FFS, talk about overthinking a very minor problem.
Apart from anything else a coating of grease in that particular area, will help prevent assorted crud finding its way into the bearings.

Grease it with lithium grease. That said. It's probably not doing any harm apart from looking unsightly. If it was rubbing against anything, it wouldn't be going rusty!

Don't worry about getting grease on your rear disc by the way. even if you cake that spacer in grease it's not going to find it's way onto the disc unless you put it there.

I'm pretty sure it's phosphoric acid, rather than chromic, so forms the passivated iron (III) phosphate layer.

But a smear of grease is cheaper, given that you probably have some lying about.

I suspect the reason my CB250RS only got a rosette at a classic show was because I used grease on my spacer.

Cheers all, greased her up good and proper today.
I meant to do it earlier but got distracted by an orange brake piston, arguably more deathly. Shocked

If you ever take it off again and don't mind waiting a couple of days I'll replate it for you.

Really cool offer, and I may have to try messaging you in future asking to replate more important stuff (for monies ofc) cheers. Smile
However it's my daily ride and I can't bring myself to stoop to peasant transport. (travel sickness makes me puke for starters)

My main concern was if it would destroy my seals anyway, and the BCF concensus appears to be that I'm overly worrying, so all good.
Chalk another one up to the BCF GREAT SUCCESS column. Thumbs Up

No problem, I can normally get it done the same day if you're desperate for the bits back.
