Hi, I'm planning to get an alarmed disc lock to use it when I'm going away for a day or two and want to keep bike safe at night. At home I use 16mm chain but it's too heavy to take it with me.

In general; is disc lock a good anti-theft device? I'm a bit worried that someone could brake the disc and walk away with the bike?

Which brands\models do you recommend: my budget is maximum £100, preferably I would like to spend half of it?
My main concern is that the alarm will be too easly triggered for example by wind, so I'm looking for something that will not be going off too easily.
I was thinking about getting one of the Xena's or Oxford's disc brake, something like these:
Xena XX10:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/XENA-XX10-Motorcycle-Alarm-Yellow/dp/B00AB3GFLY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1494514844&sr=8-4&keywords=xena+xx10
Oxford:

And even worse than that, they might even break the disc as well.

I have a Xena and rate it; it's never been attacked though so I don't know if its been successful by its mere presence, or how it would stand up to a kicking.

I always put mine on the rear wheel, on the basis that if any bugger's going to try lugging the bike into the back of a Transit, complete with wailing alarm, then they'll have a lot more trouble lifting the locked rear wheel of the ground than the front.

There are two sizes of Xena alarm, depending on the width of your disc; I bought the wrong one and had to swap it. I think there's a template on the site now, so you can check precisely.

Finally - if you do use a disc lock, do make sure you use some form of reminder, so you don't try to ride off with it in place. Yes, ouch.

I have an XX10 and hate it.

Not true, its quite good now I've removed the PoS alarm unit. Super sensitive, gives you 0.3 seconds to get the key in before it goes off.

At least my 2 year old one does. Maybe they changed the design.

EDIT: I might have the XX14 actually, not sure.

I bought the Oxford one a couple of weeks ago. Only used it for a couple of nights when parked in Portree (Skye). Bike was still there in the morning but it's hardly the crime capital of the universe. Seems solid enough and there's enough time to get it off before the alarm goes off. Alarm is fairly loud but not deafening.

Assessment - highly visible and got to be better than nothing.

None of them.

BCF barbecue 1 had a live demonstration of how useless they were. Somebody purposely set off a brake disc alarm and covered it with his hand. It was barely audible.

The oxford one will go off at random so much it will either become backround noise or you you rip the batteries out.

I've got the xena XX14 for the front and Xzz6Y for the rear.
Alarms can be a bugger but I find putting them at 5 or 7 o'clock on the disc helps.

That's interesting, as I only ever put them on at 10 or 2, because wanted it as close to locking out as possible so not to gain momentum and damage as much had I pushed the bike off.

Don't put them on at 10 or 2 Smile

What Itchy said.

And although I wasn't at the BCF BBQ I can attest that I heard nothing in Northants.

Bag of shite the lot of them.

Which one was it?

Abus Granit Detector XPlus 8077 is supposed to be 100db - are they that easily muffled?

I had one: top tip: put a blob of grease over the screw for changing the batteries, maybe grease the thread, too. The rest of the thing is pretty well made out of rustproof stuff...
I had to dig the alarm sounder out of the front of mine as when the batteries get low it starts "plipping" and there was no way the batteries were coming out ever again...

Uh BCF barbecue 1 was 7 years ago. It might have been a Xena. It's just the holes for the sound were really small and could be covered.

It's an interesting thread which I hadn't seen before, so gave me cause for concern. However, did you read right to the end? Seems that there was a reason for the failed lock which Xena held up their hands to, and that current models are made of stainless steel as opposed to the zinc alloy in the case of the failed lock. I agree it doesn't show the company in a great light, but personally I'm not about to buy a replacement lock and if I were you I wouldn't be ruling out the Xena just on the basis of that thread.

I did, they claim that the disc lock was fake. I don't know what was that broken model made of exactly. And cheapest Xena disc lock made of stainless steel, that I found, cost around £80 which is quite a lot.

Well no; according to that thread, Xena said it was genuine; but that it had come from a defective batch, and was made of a zinc alloy rather than stainless steel.

You mentioned the XX10 in your first post - not sure what that yellow one's made of, but this one's definitely stainless steel, at £60: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001KO9PY2 (I needed the larger XX15 for my own bike though)

And a monthly dab of surgical spirit using a cotton bud on the sensor things also helps me. I can't remember the last time I had a walk of shame where the alarm has gone off 30 seconds after locking it, then pretend it isn't yours despite wearing full gear.

"Secondly, we would submit that it is not ours.
(...) Apart from a vaguely familiar shape, this bears none of the marks of the locks we build and appears to be made of materials we do not use.
Copying of our alarmed disc-lock design is common and widespread. Equalling our build quality is not. There is nothing in the photo to suggest we made this lock (...)"

Maybe I go for this one, but I'm not sure if there will be a big difference between £60 and £20 model Rolling Eyes

I have received a brand new Xena XN10 lock in the post, free of charge.
I have also been phoned by Xena themselves from Canada, who have admitted that my lock was a genuine Xena lock with genuine markings and manufacturing numbers, made about 5 years ago.
They have now identified a defective batch of my model of disk lock, my broken lock is now on it's way to the manufacturers in Hong Kong.
They also apologised for the implication that I could have had a fake lock. ( I was sure I had bought from a legitimate source).
They have also said, that my lock was made with a Zinc metal alloy, which has deteriorated over time.
They have assured me that their new models are stainless steel and will last a life time.
