hey guys,

notice this noise earlier and took off the front sprocket casing, teeth look fine to me yet this is as far as my mechanical knowledge goes, any ideas what the noise could be?

its a cbr125r 2011 18k miles new chain/sprockets in the past 6 months.

ive uploaded the video to youtube :

That my friend is the sound of a chain running over the sprocket.
Wait here a little longer and you'll get other replies.

Only thing I will add (totally unrelated to your video) as you mentioned new C&S is have you checked the chain tension. Some new chains stretch a little.

how dry is the chain? Oil up the rollers and see if the noise gets quieter Thumbs Up

as above, that is pretty much the sound a chain makes as it turns with the sprocket. A dry chain will make it sound louder ime

How many miles were done in this '6 months' and do you lube your chain enough? Its surprising how quickly a chain or sprocket will wear when left to run dry for extended periods

i have done a fair few miles since the change, i adjusted the tension, re lubed it and just went out for a couple of miles, seems to have calmed down a bit, yet when i do pass stopped cars or walls i can still hear the noise, and the noise is a new one. it is going in the garage next month for a new tire so i will have them take a look. i just wanted to ensure i wasn't missing something a bit serious with the sprocket.

new(ish) to bikes or just this one or just had something done and now all you can see/hear is 'somethings wrong'?

I would suspect you've only just 'noticed' the problem because your attention has been drawn to the drive train since work was done to it and now you've 'found a new noise' to worry about...

I'm a nightmare for this... My 2l turbo diesel's had the terminal top end rattle of impending doom (that no one else can hear for some strange reason) for at least 20,000 miles Rolling Eyes.

My R1's about to throw a rod (although everyone else say's it sounds lovely with a very mild top end tick (common on older yzf's)).

It's all about gaining experience and learning what 'stuff's supposed to sound like as well as managing personal paranoia (of you are so inclined).

On topic -> chain sounds fine...

you 1000% sure it is lined up correctly? Could be chain alignment is out or the chain too tight.

or, as i've found out in the past, if you go looking for issues you will be sure to find them.

If it rides fine and isnt binding or needing adjustment every 10 miles, it will prolly be find. It sounds fine to me.. i'd bet if we all video'd our front sprocket we'd here the same noise

If this is the first chain and sprocket replacement that might explain why you are hearing it. The original front sprocket likely had a rubber silencer on each side to cut the noise.

Ah! now this is interesting. I've just done a C&S replacement, the sprocket that came off was just a sprocket, the new one had rubber dampers on it. At first I thought it was the wrong sprocket, but it went on fine.

Do the silencers wear off over time?

They do wear but not to the point of no longer being there.

AFAIK only genuine front sprockets have a rubber silencer on them. I have at least never seen an after market sprocket with them.

Cheers Thumbs Up I'd guess this one didn't have it to start with as there is no sign, though it's in good enough condition to make me think it's not the original.

The sprocket was a JT from whatever was on sale at Wemoto last week. The part number is JTF297.15RB. Looks like this:

The standard sprocket part no. is JTF297.15, 297 is the pattern and 15 the tooth count so RB on the end must be the rubber bits.

New line for JT there.

I'm surprised they haven't jumped on it before. Seemed nice, smooth and quiete this morning, but it's the first ride on a new chain, so I'd expect that anyway.

Looking at the old sprocket, I noticed it was a 14 tooth, this new one is 15 tooth (which appears to be standard). What difference (if any) will that make?

More teeth on the front basically means more top end speed and less acceleration.

Edit - you can plug the sprocket sizes into https://www.gearingcommander.com/ and compare stock to -1 on the front.

Good site Thumbs Up

Apparently I can get up to almost 40mph in 1st at 9500RPM? Shocked It'll make an almighty racket, but I might give that a shot...

A rather nice side effect is getting to higher speeds at low RPMs, 60 mph at under 5K will do wonders for my MPG Razz
