some bikes have a better reputation for mile munching than others
I got my 1999 reg ZZR600 4 years ago with 25k on it, it's now just shy of 60k and while I've had temp sensor for the fan fail and two reg/recs (replacement was second hand) everything else on it has been consumables and it's been more reliable than the wife's car bought 1 year old with full warranty!
what bike is it? ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.

There have been a few cases of gearbox issues (jumping out of gear) but not that many. Recommended check is to hammer the bike in 4th gear and see if it holds the gear. There is a dedicated forum and it's worth looking at. mainly happy punters.
Otherwise, marvelous bikes and cheap too |

The old Fazer thous are the same. No real concerns over mileage, as long as it's been looked after to a reasonable level. I know of one that has done over 200k miles. Mind you, might be a bit of a Trigger's broom, the one I'm thinking of Big Jap IL4s are about the strongest things you can get.
However, I've always looked for the lowest mileage I could afford, never bought with more than 17k on the clock. I would've thought that there would be enough CB13s around that you'd find something with a relatively low mileage at a good price, with a little patience. Might as well if you can.

Big, unstressed engine, mature owners who've probably pampered it, no worries. Just bear in mind that even the best maintenance doesn't magically reduce wear, so higher mileage = lower price. Don't fall for any "appreciating classic" lines. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Don't think I've heard that one applied to the CB13 yet. If it's oily then suspect valve guides or worn rings/cylinder. Make sure you start the bike from cold and check for any smoke, give it a good run as well if possible. Get the owner to leave it running whilst checking for any oil leaks and make sure thermostat/fan kicks in etc.
Assuming that's ok then it'/s all normal consumable stuff. Head bearings I'd imagine arent abused much on CB1300's, Try and have a poke around all the suspension bearings/bushes. If theyre covered in grime/dirt then expect to need replacing them.
What condition are fork stanchions in, if theyre pitted can cost a bit, are seals all ok etc.?
Look at pads and disc, try and pop on a stand and give a spin if possible, bit hard to see but if it's bad will be able to see if need truing. Look for grooves in discs and take a vernier (or micrometer if youre fussy) and measure for thickness. Take a bright torch and look through to pads, are they ok?
Are tyres and chain ok?
If all are then it's probably been looked after and likely to be fine to buy.
P.S. Yes I'm a bastard at buying bikes, never sell to me! |
Is any of this specific to the CB1300? ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

I do wonder how long engine life applies to the rest of the bike. I'd still rather go for a lower mileage example. |
At 50k miles, if it hasn't been done, I'd possibly look at replacing wheel bearings and swing arm bushes, but they're not major expenses so I wouldn't necessarily let that put me off if everything else is good at a good price. Suspension might be shagged if it's still on standard, so worth thinking about this; bit more expensive. I don't know if Honda put decent quality stuff on in the first place though.
You missed one that looked good? - I did when I was looking for a Fazer, but even though they stopped making them in 2005, it wasn't long before another really nice example came up - truly immaculate too. In fact, someone on the Fazer forum beat me to the one I was looking at, which had only done about 5k miles, but turned out the one I got was in better nick at 15k (don't ask ). CB13s don't seem to be uncommon, so worth waiting for the right one I would think. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017
