Is there such a thing and where do I get it from. Rubber spray to water proof the webbing in the jacket sleeves where they zip open. Mine unzip to the inner elbow and water is getting through the zip and then through the membrane. It is an alpine star jacket about 12 years old but in very good condition except for the sleeves.

The only thing I can think of is Plastidip, but I have no idea if it'd work. I suspect it won't.

I've yet to find any waterproofing solution that actually works, except for wax impregnation on canvas. I can't see plasti-dip standing up to all the movement involved. Interesting question though, it'd be good to know if anyone has found a magic bullet.

Scotch guard or some other nano hydrophobic spray should work - it may not make it 100% waterproof, but it will be decidedly better...

Tent water-proofing works on fabric pretty well.
Fabsil, I think is the stuff local camping shop sell. The aerosol seems a placebo; the small tins are half the price for 1/5th the quantity; I tend to buy the big, I think half gallon tins, every decade or so... or when I do the tent and use left overs for the rest of the gear. 'as and when', maybe every couple of seasons or so.

Zips? Err... yeah.... no.. no, and no again. Never found a way to stop them leaking. Zips usually have a backing flap that helps stop water pouring through, but the zip itself? If that worn lots of water gets through, it's probably pretty worn out.

On metal zips on jackets/jeans/boots/gloves, old hands used to suggest they should be oiled from time to time with a few drips of caster or sewing machine oil, a) so they zipped more easily, b) to help repel water from getting through the teeth.. MAY be worth a shot.

Otherwise, if it's a vent, and you are more concerned with keeping water from getting through when closed than air when open, I might be tempted to use gaffer tape over the zip, or maybe a strip of tent seam sealer... maybe even RTV?

Otherwise? Seems fact of life, modern kit isn't made to last, like it used to!

I've done a hiking bag and a tent ground sheet both with great results (but takes a while for the smell to dissipate).

Non anti bacterial silicone calk + white spirit.
Mix the two and paint it on letting it get absorbed into the fabric.

Result = flexible water proof layer that does not peel off as its impregnated in the fabric...

I'm not to sure about having it directly against your skin for long periods but it works like a fiend for bergen and ground sheets Thumbs Up

Interesting. What sort of ratio or consistency would we be looking for?

I generally aim for 1:3 ratio.

It does take a little patients to get the silicon to mix in homogeneously with the white spirit but it most certainly gets there and applies easily.

I've used it as seam sealer on my textile waterproof 'dungarees' although the fabric itself keeps splitting... probably as they're 8-9 years old now and used every time I ride on the road Thinking

on my canvas camper I use "Fabsil Gold" brush it on, then wipe it with a dry cloth.

It definitely works, but the fabric goes a bit more rigid.

I have to redo the camper every year

Someone mentioned you can also use brick sealer as its basically the same stuff. cant confirm though?

I've tried brick sealer, it didn't seem to make any difference to my leaking cordura / Sinaquatm sleeves.

It might have been bad sealant, but it doesn't seem to cure, which I imagine the silicone / spirit mix would do.

My daughter has a toy hospital with some little patients. And some tiny doctors. Wink

I use fabsil, and that more or less does the trick. I buy the gallon tins and brush or spray it on.

Here is a cheap tip to try.Close the zip, and rub along the teeth with a wax candle. treat it inside and out if possible. Limits the amount of water penetration, and lubricates the zip. Treatment may need frequently repeating.

Try something like Aquasure, its a bit like silicon sealant but its meant for repairing waders.
It sticks to anything very well and is fully waterproof, ive used it in the past to glue the soles back on my fishing boots, 5yrs later there still holding good.
Its about £7-8 for a small tube but will last for years.
Once you have used some put the lid back on and pop it in the freezer, when you take it out it just needs a couple of hours to thaw out then ready to use again, i had a tube in my freezer 3yrs and it worked fine when i came to use it again.

If it keeps water out of waders then it will keep it out of your jacket.

Does it dry none tacky? As a coating but not as a glue?

Its not tacky at all when it dries, read some of the reviews about it on Amazon

You have to get it good and hot in order for the wax to penetrate. Fine with cotton, not so great with Cordura or other plastics.

Just ordered some to see how good it is. Will report back after trial.

Ah, I noticed today that my brick sealant is "solvent free" and named "eco[something]", i.e. it is doubtless fully conformant with every EU regulation, and doesn't do a damn thing.

Hi,
I use nikawax for waterproofing jackets etc.
Dunno if it's any use for what op wants it for, but they are good at giving out free samples (enough to do 2 coats or a tent)
Maybe worth contacting them?

cheers,
GSZ
